UCLA Poli Major hopeful. Please chance me!

I am a CCC poli sci major that just submitted the UC app for UCSD (TAG), UCLA (TAP) and UCB. I am pretty confident about UCSD, and I am just going to assume that I won't get into UCB so that I don't get my hopes up. What I am worried about is UCLA.

My UCLA gpa is a 3.6363636... (correct if I'm wrong but I believe that would be rounded up to a 3.64) . I know that isn't very high, however I had one semester where I was having a lot of personal problems (plus being a fulltime honor student and athlete) and it really affected my grades. My counselors told me not to worry too much because it is VERY obvious by looking at my transcripts that it was an isolated incident (the semester before was all A's and the ones after are mostly all A's with an occasional B). I mentioned this in the "additional comments" section of the application. Needless to say my GPA would be waaaay higher had it not been for that screw up.

My personal statement received very good feed back from my counselors and my English 3 Honors professor (who has apparently read many personal statements before), I have done a lot of community service and I used to work at a US embassy in Asia, which i tied into my personal statement. I also talked about how i have lived abroad and travelled a lot. I am a student athlete and as the TAP suggests, an honors student. Also, I have aced all of my "major prep" classes (which I am assuming is just the classes that are needed to transfer and are relevant to my major) so my major prep gpa would be a 4.0. Oh and I have completed all of my pre rec except for Poli Sci 2 which is only offered in the spring anyway and I am already enrolled in it for next sem.

So honestly, what are my chances? A UCLA rep told me that I was good but I am still freaking out. I put Classical Civilization as my alternate major but I REALLY want to go there for Poli Sci which I know it is highly impacted. And I don't really want UCSD, I want UCLA or UCB. Thanks for reading my annoying rant!

Well as a fellow poli sci hopeful with a similar gpa (3.63), your extracurriculars and essays definitely make you a better candidate than me, yet I was pretty pessimistic about my chances anyways, especially since I didn’t tap. Realistically, I’d say you won’t make it in since your GPA is lacking and the major is impacted, but its not the end of the world. You’re in at UCSD, and even if its not your first choice, it’s still a damn fine university. And this late in the game, you can only wait until April so my advice to you is to stop freaking out and just relax while maintaining your Spring grades. Peace.

Aw man I am sorry to hear that. Well hopefully we get in haha good luck!

Hey aztecstudent. Unlike the suggestion offered by xtony1, I think that you have a good chance of getting in. I can even say that you might have a better chance of getting into Berkeley (I will explain this later). I’m a currently a transfer Cal student who got into both universities, and from what I’ve seen at UCB, GPA is not that important as much as the thing that distinguishes you from the rest of the crowd. Every student who gets into UCLA has a good GPA / Extracurricular crap / Honor Status / etc. But Berkeley students are a bit different. They are all unique and have special stories of them that makes them stand out. For example, I know a student who used to work in the porn industry for many years now attending Cal with baby girl.

Though her GPA was not the highest, the story she told made her a fabulous student to be chosen. To reiterate, the struggles you encountered, the ambition you have: these are signifiers of a lucrative transfer student. Hope this helps.

Sweet that makes me feel better haha. Thats one thing I can say about my essay and application, it is filled with “weird” hardships that most people would never encounter. Hopefully it is enough to sway them! Thank you so much for the information! (:
