first off i'd like to know if there are any polsci majors out there who plan on transferring to UCLA from a CC, and what ur stats are so i can get a jist of what my competition is.

also, what do u think of my chances at UCLA or USC:

Major: polysci
GPA: 3.5
many extra curricular activities, memeber of student organizations and finance committee,
good personal statements

i went to the TAP/transfer conference yesterday at UCLA...they said that poli sci is impacted, so you will need at least a 3.5 to be competitive...in your case, you're rite on the border line, so you should try to raise your GPA..also, if you're part of TAP, you've a really good chance...try to have a bomb ass (great) essay...o yea, finish your IGETC and major prep course...tat's all i can tell you cuz i'm not a poli sci major...USC is easier than UCLA, so your chance is pretty good...just don't lower tat GPA any lower than 3.5...hope this help and good luck..

Also, make sure you've completed all major requirements. For an impacted major, I don't think they'll take anyone that hasn't finished all lower division major requirements (unless your particular school doesn't offer those classes, then they make an exception).

I'm transfering and have the same major, and i was at TAP at UCLA, and from what i gathered, yes your GPA has to be up there, 3.5 seems to be the average but then again all transfer's GPA are about 3.5 with any major so im guessing for poli sci it's about 3.6 or so don't worry about it if you'll full bellow or above that, they will look at your whole application to make a decision. Being in thier TAP program does help ALOT though I spoke to alot of transfer students that day and almost all stressed the advantage of TAP in thier application, so did application advisors there. But focus on your essay and working on your GPA and EC's help but a REP from UCLA told me its not so much looked at unless your like a white house intern or something. And one more thing don't look at us as your competetion, because UCLA seems to be so random with their selection so who knows... Well hope you get admitted, the best of luck!

3.76
some EC's
pretty good essay
and im in TAP

thanks for ur help guys. i really appreciate your feedback. about TAP, can i join after i've submitted my application? and if so, can i update my application saying that i'm in tap?

also, I'm just curious, if they make their decision in april before the spring semester is over, then does that mean it really doesn't matter what grades u get in spring?

this is because i'm going to take some two 4 unit classes in spring, and one 5 unit class which i'm absolutely sure i will get A's.

It is possible to join TAP at virtually anytime, which would be meaningless. In order to get preference, you need to complete TAP. That means you would need to take 15 units of honors classes at your CC.

The grades you will receive in the spring aren't necessarily factored into how competitive you are. If you received a grade of F, D, or possibly even C, if might cause them to retract their offer of admission. If it jeopardizes your completion of IGETC, for example, there is a strong chance they will.

Well the thing with TAP is yes you can join it at anytime, but UCLA wants to see that you have been taking scholars courses up to your application deadline. Lets say for example you started tap this fall you need to make a notation in your application when you list all the courses you have taken and in progress. So lets say you took 3 scholars classes in the fall UCLA will see that and you still get the prefrence, so no it is not meaningless. You do not have to complete the actually TAP program to get the preference, as long as you indicate that you are making progress in completing the program up to spring. So in your particular case it would not make sense to joing TAP after you turned in your application because that progress will not be indicated.

Just to get this right they wont take your spring grades into consideration (btw Is this because they would have reached a decision on your application by then?) right? Also, will they take your gpa after this semester(fall 2004) into consideration? If so, does that mean that we can still improve our chances after we've submitted our application?

NO, your GPA is calculated up untill your fall term, so spring will not be used to calculate your GPA... you do however must maintain a "C" average in spring because once they decide to accept you.

This is somewhat of a sidenote- but from what I gather, the main theme of the counselor's conference (which was while we were all at the TAP workshops) was 3.5s and above. For everything.

Which, of course, doesnt mean that people with lower GPAs wont get in. But the majority of transfer admits this year will probably be 3.5+. Just good to know. This also means that theyre looking for 3.7/3.8s for any over-enrolled majors.

You can still improve your grades this semester, which will be counted for your application. The WIP form (which has a new name, but I cant remember right now) will go out in january.

darn it...3.7/3.8 for impacted majors...i will probably have a 3.697 at the end of this semester for biochem..this is nonsennse, but does any one know if they round?..hehehe,,thanks

Yea I agree with allie, I'm pretty sure they'll round and plus I imagine when they see your application and see your GPA compared to a 3.71, they'll most likely put you in the same pile... but im not sure I guess it's wishful thinking =) GOOD LUCK....
