The prereqs for the major are one stats class and four political science classes. I've already taken stats and one polisci classs. I am planning to take two more polisci prereqs next semester for a total of 3 out of 5 prereqs. My 2 local CCCs only have these 3 of the 5 possible prereqs but ASSIST says you should take 4 political science prereqs before transfer. Will UCLA count this against me? The next CCC that has another prereq is 9 miles away.

9 miles!!! Woooooahhhhhhh!!!

They’re not supposed to, but I feel like I do. Try to take the courses at other CCs or online, trust me…come April 2012 you dont want to regreat not taking all

Yeah it’s kind of a lame excuse but based on last year’s schedule that CCC 9 miles away only has the class I need in the fall. So if I take it in the fall I am stuck with 3 polisci classes. I could take all 3 or pray that they offer the class in the spring, which they did not do last year. If I go with the latter option I don’t want to end up putting the class on my application for spring and have it not end up being offered at the CCC.

Wait, are you sure there are 5? To my knowledge (at my cc) you only need to take 3 poli sci classes and stats. I know all agreements are different but people I’ve talked to from other ccs have had the same reqs as me.

It’s three minimum preparatory courses to be considered for the major, but on ASSIST the heading says “four courses from:” and goes on to list 5 possible polisci classes.

Oh yeah, my bad. I somehow forgot the fact that I took political theory last night. My advice would be to finish all the prerequisites, because you’re always better off having them done in terms of admissions. Plus, when there are only four, you should go out of your way to take the last class.

Sorry, but missing pre-reqs could hurt your chances. UCLA is really trying to have students graduate in 4 years, 2 for transfers. You have time to search for online courses at other schools…you could be living in Sacramento and take a few Poli Sci courses online at SMC or West LA.

The minimum is 3, but only if your CCC doesn’t offer four. Students with 4 will be more competitive.

The Stats requirement is a toughie. Very few CCC stats classes qualify, and they’re invariably “Psych Stats” or “Social Science Statistics” courses. Regular Math Stats (Statistics 10 or something similar) will satisfy IGETC, but you’ll have to take an approved stats class when you get into UCLA.

My CC only offered 3, and it was enough to satisfy Cal and UCSD’s policsci prereqs; I thought it did for LA too, but then I realized I needed the 4th, which to me significantly reduces my chances there. I guess we’ll see, though.

Okay thanks for the advice guys. If anyone knows of any online political theory classes can you share them? Thanks.
