UCLA Political Scienece transfes

Are any of you out there? How you doing on prereqs?

STATS 10 Intro to Statistical Reasoning

Four courses from:

POL SCI 10 Intro to Political Theory

POL SCI 20 World Politics

POL SCI 30 Politics and Strategy

POL SCI 40 Intro to American Politics

POL SCI 50 Intro to Comparative Politics

I should get an A on Stats, have an A in intro, B/C in Poli Philosophy, taking the last 2 in Spring. I'm worried about the Poli Philosohpy class, I'm trying my best not to get a C =(

hey im going to apply as poly sci major as well when are you applying?

as for pre-reqs im doing polysci 2 now doing stat over winter and then doing poly sci 1 5 7 in the spring so thats political theory, world politics and intro to american politics my school doesn’t have a course articulated for the politics and strategy

Just a heads up for you Poli Sci majors on stats: UCLA accepts “Stats 10” from your CC to fulfill your Math requirement BUT the Political Science Department at UCLA DOES NOT. In other words you will be accepted into the school but if you have only completed Stats 10 you will be required to take another Poli Sci stats class (Poli Sci 6R) once you arrive here. To avoid this mistake (unlike me) the Poli Sci Dep. will accept “Psych. Stats” as fulfillment of your math requirement (I’m not sure if all CC’s offer this but mine did and my counselor told me there was no difference…of course). Not a huge deal but I was annoyed that no one told me this before transfer and I could have just taken ONE stats class instead of two (i hate math). So check this out and see if you can make your life just a tad bit easier. No reason to take an extra class if you don’t have to.

I’m takings Stats XL10 at UCLA extension. Do you know if this class will fulfill the requirement for Pli Sci? I DO NOT WANT TO TAKE ANOTHER MATH CLASS!!! UGHH LOL

yeah im doing the stats xl10 at ucla extension that starts in january i know it counts for the igetc… hopefully it works for the pre-req too i hate math

So are all of you planning on going to law school afterward?

I know I am.

@DC and SMC - It sounds like it does not fulfill the PoliSci requirements, based on what CBB is saying. Perhaps it would be best to contact the school before you take the class?

I believe 6r is only required if your concentration is Methods and Models. Mine won’t be so I think 'm covered with Statistics 10.

Preparation for the Major
Required: Four lower division courses from Political Science 10, 20, 30, 40, 50. These lower division courses are requisites to upper division courses and 10, 20, 30 & 6, 40, and 50 are required in those fields designated as the concentration or distribution field. PS 6 or 6R along with PS 30 is required for a concentration or distrbution in Field V, Methods and Models. Students must also take one statistics course from Political Science 6 or 6R, Anthropology M80, Economics M40, Geography M40, Social Sciences 40, Sociology M18, Statistics 10, Statistics 11, Statistics M12, or Statistics M21C. PS 6 or 6R may be taken for credit and is not considered a repeat of content if another of the listed statistics courses has already been taken.

smcguy dont know where you go but if i remember correctly pinkerfloyd also took stats xl10 at ucla extension and it counted on the igetc and prereq for polysci

I’m not transferring next year, but I am a political science major as well. I was just wondering what kind of extra curricular you guys have done, if any?

0 from what i understand its basically gpa/ finished pre reqs

I am glad this came up, because I my alternate major for UCLA is going to be Political Science and the statistics requirement on assist for me is 2 Psych classes. Psychological Stats and Psychological research.

I really would like to Double Major in History and Political Science. At the very least a Minor in Political Science. I will be TAP certified for UCLA, but I am aiming for Berkeley.

Any advice for pursuing Poli Sci as a 2nd major? On the best way to go about it?

Koreo- 3.5+ GPA, finish pre reqs is most important.

Berkeley- What’s your first choice?

Took American Politics last semester and got a B. Taking Political Philosophy, World Politics and Comparative Politics right now. I expect Bs or As. Taking Stats next semester. I’ll be grateful for a C.

killer- Where are you taking Political Philosophy?

Los Angeles Pierce College. This is the first semester it’s being offered here, actually. I have no idea if it will be here next semester. Latest rumor is all our adjunct professors for Political Science were let go and Pol Phil is being taught by an adjunct.

SMC - my first choice is History, but I think it is migrating towards Political Science. I am such a nerd for both.

I really would like to double major, at the very least minor in Poli Sci.

killer…wait no polysci 7 or 5? cuz i would be taking both next semester from what i heard i think kushner is doing polysci 5 and by adjunct prof you mean no more levy?

PoliSci 7 this semester is being taught by Nabulsi and Levy. Nabulsi is a full-time teacher but I don’t know if he’s doing PoliSci 7 next semester. I have no idea if Levy is an adjunct or not. The rumor about the adjuncts is just that, rumor. I heard from Dawson that Gabrielli was doing PoliSci 5 next semester, but then heard from Nabulsi that PoliSci 5 was cut. The only PolSci class at Pierce that I know for sure is gone is PolSci 19.

To clarify a little bit; You MUST take Poli Sci 6 OR 6R if you took Stats 10 (and not Psych Stats) at your CC. Yes Stats 10 WILL satisfy your IGETC but it will NOT satisfy the requirements of the Political Science Department. Remember you ARE NOT admitted into the Political Science major from your CC. You will be admitted into UCLA as a Pre-Poli Sci major until you fulfill the rest of the majors requirements for admittance into the Department. I sat in a large room of Poli Sci transfers on my orientation day and I would say 90% were not aware that Stats 10 would not satisfy the Poli Sci requirement. This is EXTREMELY new as it was just enacted this year for the 09 transfers, which explains why almost none of our counselors were aware of it. And no that is not just for Methods and Models, the requirement applies to all Poli Sci concentrations.

@SMC I do not believe that XL10 will satisfy the Poli 6 or 6R requirement but you can always petition the Department. Although if i remember correctly a few guys were in your shoes and their petitions were rejected as XL10 does not cover the material that is emphasized in Poli 6 and 6R.
