UCLA projected to beat Cal for fall 2006

and it doesn't include spring admission.

Quote:
Berkeley admitted 1,995 students for the spring of 2003. It is interesting that the yield for this group was higher than the admits for the fall. This is because the applications of the spring admits are weaker and they have fewer better options. UCLA only admits for the fall. UCLA admitted fewer students for 2003 than Berkeley with nearly 25% greater number of applications.

Kinda old news but...

UCLA Chosen to Lead Nano-Manufacturing Research Center

The National Science Foundation has awarded UCLA a grant worth nearly $18 million over five years to establish a new Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center. The new center will combine fundamental science and technology in nano-manufacturing that will transform laboratory science into industrial applications in nano-electronics and biomedicine.

UCLA is one of only two universities ; and the only one in California chosen this year to lead such a center.

UCLA is joined by five other partner institutions:

University of California, Berkeley;

Stanford University;

University of California, San Diego;

University of North Carolina at Charlotte;

and HP labs.

CotoDeCasa,

What happened to your 2003 name? Got banned?

The old man and tyon the sparrow
Sparrow lick
The angry old woman cutting Tions tongue
The old man walked a long way
...many treasures in the small box
the old woman stopped on the way
the old woman opened the lid
Once upon a time there lived an old couple.
One day, the old man went to the mountain to cut down wood. At lunchtime, the old man went for lunch. A sparrow ate his lunch, and then slept.
The old man was disgusted, and shouted. But the sparrow still slept.
The old man put the sparrow in his bosom, and came Home.
The old man loved the sparrow very much and named it tyon. But the old woman did not like the sparrow.
One day, the old woman went to the river to wash. When the old woman came Home, the sparrow was licking her starch. The old woman got angry.
“Tyon, come on.”
The old woman caught the sparrow and cut its tongue. The sparrow fly away in pain.
After a while the old man came Home from the mountain.
“Tyon, Tyon.”
The old man called the sparrow, but the sparrow never fly to him.
the old man asked the old woman.
“Do you know the whereabouts of Tyon?”
The old woman answered.
“I cut its tongue, and threw it away,”
The old man said.
“You are cruel.”
The old man began to weep. And the old man was made a lunch by the old woman, and went out to look for the sparrow.
The old man walked to where. And there was a man who washes a horse over there. The old man asked the man.
“Do you know a sparrow which cut its tongue?”
“Yes, I do.”
“Please tell me where did a sparrow go?”
“If you can drink seven tubs of washing juice of horse, I will teach,”
The man said. Then, the old man drank seven tubs of washing juice of horse.
“When you go this way, there is a man who washes a cow. Then, hear it.”
Since the man said so, the old man walked to where. And there was a man who washes a cow.
“Do you know a sparrow which cut its tongue?”
Then, the old man asked the man.
“Yes, I do.”
“Where did a sparrow go?”
“A sparrow went to the house of sparrow.”
“Please tell me the house of sparrow somewhere.”
“If you can drink seven tubs of washing juice of cow, I will teach,”
The man said. Then, the old man drank seven tubs of washing juice of cow.
“When you turn around this mountain, there is a bamboo bush. The house of sparrow is there,”
The man told the old man.
The old man went around the mountain. And there was a bamboo bush.
“Is the house of sparrow here?”
asked the old man And Tyon came out.
“I came to apologize.”
“Don’t worry it is okay and thank you for coming. Please come and dine with me.”
Tyon gave the old man a dinner.
The next morning, the old man said.
“I would want to go Home.”
Tyon then asked;
“Which do you want, a big box or a small box?”
Tyon carried a big box and a small box.
“I am old, so I want to get a small box.”
The old man shouldered a small box, and went Home.
The old man went Home, and the old man opened the small box. There were many treasures in the small box.
The old woman looked it, and marked time.
“I go, too. I want to go to the house of sparrow.”
The old woman said so and did same things.
The old woman walked, and the old woman saw a man who washed a horse. The old woman asked a man.
“Do you know a sparrow which has its tongue cut? Please tell me.”
“If you can drink seven tubs of washing juice of horse, I will show you.”
The man said. Then, the old woman drank seven tubs of washing juice of horse.
“When go goes this way, there is a man who washes a cow. Then, hear it.”
Since the man said so, the old woman walked. And there was a man who washes a cow.
“Do you know where the house of sparrow is ?”
The old woman asked the man.
“If you can drink seven tubs of washing juice of cow, I will teach.”
The man said. Then, the old woman drank seven tubs of washing juice of cow.
“When it turns around this mountain, there is a bamboo bush. The house of sparrow is there,”
The man taught the old woman.
The old woman walked. And the house of sparrow has appeared.
Tyon came out and asked the old woman.
“Why did you come here?”
“I wanted to see you, and you know I looked after you.”
The old woman said.
“Please go inside.”
Tyon said so, and gave the old woman a dinner.
“Although I returns, isn’t there any souvenir?”
The old woman said so, and pressed.
“Which do you want, a big box or a small box?”
“I want a big box. My body is strong.”
The old woman said so, and shouldered a big box.
The old woman wanted to see the contents of the box and stopped on the way. She just couldn't wait to get home. Then, the old woman opened the lid of the box.
There were many ghosts in the small box. The old woman has reversed.
The end, the end

Holy crap...I read that story in Japanese class.

Still, why not the old name?

How did you get rejected by UCR but admitted to UCB?

That's pretty ridiculous. Rejected by UCR? And accepted to UCB? Unless this is a joke, maybe Cal's admissions really does need to have new, harsher standards. I am all up for it.

In all seriousness, I am a bit weirded out as to why people (maybe the same person) keep creating threads dissing Berkeley in the Berkeley forum. Give me a break. Were you guys rejected to Berkeley or what? Is it some kind of insane, pro-your-own-university mentality? Excessive patriotism?

All I can say is, as nice as possible of course, get a life.

Edit: I realize this isn't in the Berkeley forum--so don't point this out, but what I have said still stands true.

My spring admit roommate got into Brown and U Va. I'm not sure how spring admits work, but some are quite strong. Perhaps they are just gambling as to whether they will enroll.

Some people I know were rejected by UCR's guarenteed admissions program for various reasons (didn't do fulfill the art requirement, ect). Cal and UCR probalby reject people who they feel are using the school as a safety. Why shouldn't they?

coto:

Cal does not have a separate application process for spring -- the fall admission process accepts all candidates, and the computer randomly assigns some kids to start in spring due to housing issues.

You sure it's random?

Bluebayou: It's not random. Fall admits have stronger stats than spring admits.

I have a feeling it isn't random, but I haven't seen any documentation about it either way.

lots of qualified students rejected. UCLA is tougher than CAl to
get into.

They. Look. For. Different. Things.

cotodecasa, aren't you an old man or something? You act like a 15 year old kid. Just go back and read some of your posts. I'm actually embarrased for you.

The following is the statistics for students who APPLIED (not projected):

http://www.ucop.edu/news/factsheets/2006/fall+2006+app_table+10+bar+charts.pdf

be back in 2 years.

Was this projection correct?

No. Even I had my doubts.
