Hi everyone, I applied for UCLA with math major with a gpa of 3.88 and hopefully 3.91 at the end of Fall 2016. I will finish every major requirements by spring 2017.
I would love to hear Any advice from any ucla math major students !
Im not a UCLA student. But I can give some advice:
Take a look at this link:
http://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/infocenter/transfers-major
From 2012-2015, of all students who transferred into the math major, the highest the 75th percentile has been is a 3.88 with the 25th percentile around a 3.5. Meaning, 75% percent of all students who were accepted earned less than a 3.88. If you have no blemishes on your transcript, IGETC completed, and all major prep completed with a 3.88 overall, Then I believe you will get in. Just as long as that 3.88 isn’t a bunch of introductory classes, you’re fine.
I’m from Cal, but UCLA offers an introduction to upper division mathematics class (95 - Transition to Upper Division Mathematics) during summer that is highly recommended for all pure math students. The transition from lower division to upper division is very steep and that class significantly eases that transition.
If I remember correctly they (might still have) a program that will waive the tuition fee for that specific class for admitted math transfers. check with the UCLA Math Department directly for up to date information.
https://www.math.ucla.edu/ugrad/announcements/summer-school-mathematics-95 seems to be the UCLA MATH 95 information for last summer.
Oi, Your GPA looks good. Do you have any ECs to boost application? I still think you are fine either way. I got in as a 3.8 FAM with 3 prerequisites missing. Currently attempting to switch within dept. but my first quarter has been rough. You’ll come in as a Premajor but be ready to declare your major once you have UC GPA so you can enroll without issues for Winter. Please go over Linear Algebra, for certain you will at least take that math class. The class throws you into abstract spaces vs. only matrices. GL, inbox me with any questions.
Your GPA seems pretty good for admission. First quarter you will come in as pre math major, and they will advice you to take math 115, which is upper division linear algebra (get Friedberg’s book and read it before quarter even start is my advice for you here,math115 can be pretty tough if you come in unprepared),along with 2 other courses for first quarter. Then you will be able to declare your major at the final week of quarter so that you can register for other math courses for winter quarter (since most of them are restricted to math major only).
Again if you are thinking about going to UCLA then the very first class you will have to take will be math115. Be very well prepared for it
Thank you everyone! About the summer program, when and who should I contact to get information about it?
