UCLA Question

Hi,

I'm currently a History major and plan to apply this Fall 2014. I just have a quick question concerning my chances of transferring to UCLA. By the time I apply I' ll have a 3.81 major Gpa with 5 out of 3 pre reqs completed. I also received a 5 on my APUSH exam. Just wondering, would a W in a History course ( which I have retaken and aced) and a B in another History course affect my chances drastically? I received the B as it was my first summer class out of high school and I just wanted to test the waters. My W is result of my first job and the time difficulties that came with it.

I'll also be TAP certified by the fall.

Am I just being a little too paranoid ?

No, it won’t affect you drastically. yes, you are being a little too paranoid.

You are fine, I was admitted to UCLA with a 3.83 as a History major, without TAP/TAG or whatever students use to better their chances. I had 4 W’s as well.

But interesting you will need 5 pre-reqs completed. Because if you look at UCLA assist for Pre-History, you should focus on the right hand side. For example, 2 of these courses HIST 1A, 1B,1C,Hist 20,21,22 will need to be taken at UCLA.

The History Department’s Undergraduate Program consists of 16 courses in history (six lower-division - the “Preparation for the Major,” including the pre-major requirements; and ten upper-division - the “Major”). Students must complete the history pre-major before applying for admission to the major.

Preparation for the Major, Including the History Pre-Major

Required for the pre-major: Three courses including two Western Civilization (History 1A, 1B, 1C) or two in World History (History 20, 21, 22); and History 97 (or 96W).

All prep for the major classes must be taken for a letter grade. After completing the three required courses for the pre-major with a minimum grade-point average of 2.0, the student should petition to enter the major at the Department’s Undergraduate Counseling Office in 6248 Bunche Hall. Transfer credit for the pre-major courses is subject to department approval. Transfer students should consult the undergraduate counselor before entering any courses for the major.

Preparation for the Major: In addition to the three courses required in the pre-major, three additional lower-division history courses are required as preparation for the major. These three lower-division requirements can be substituted with upper-division history courses. See the Undergraduate Advisor for a list of appropriate substitutes. NOTE: Students cannot take substitutes for any of they courses required for the pre-major (1A-1B-1C; 20, 21, 22; 97).

Who knows, maybe your CC and UCLA needs to you to take 5 pre-requs courses. Mine(LAVC) only required 3.

I was admitted with a 3.5 gpa, a relatively low gpa for history major. So, I think you should be fine. Just continue working hard and don’t look back lol.

coachoa, were you TAP?

No, I wasn’t tap certified. Trust me I’m still astonished that I got in.

@Tik1127‌

Other UCs require more courses to be taken. I’m surprised UCLA needed so little

@dandan2424, Nvm, I thought you said 3 out if 5 completed, but you reversed it.
It all seems good, but I would not call you paranoid, because surprises happen all the time. Don’t take anything for granted. But you’re on the right track. Now, throw in some leadership at your CC. Get on the associated student board, which should be easy, and start a club - even if it’s 6 of you and you don’t do much of anything except have an information booth on club day. Volunteer for three hours a week somewhere, like the SPCA, or tutoring, etc.
