According to Forbes 200 list UCLA is the 3rd public University on the list surpassing Berkeley. Thoughts? I'm a little surprised. Ucla ranks 55 and Berkeley 70th. While I think state school rankings are rather low on this list, UCLA's rank is surprising.

I don’t think anyone on CC considers Forbes an accurate list. And you would be very hard pressed to find anyone who thought UCLA is better than UCB.

According to Forbes, Boston College is better than Duke and Brown. And I think everyone would agree that this also false. Point being however that Forbes list is nowhere near accurate.

I think you need to get a life.

^ Grumpy today, barrons?

Even a broken clock is correct twice a day. Cal got gipped by about twenty positions. Or should it be that UCLA is too high!

The horror! The horror! :)

Yeah, US News is the only real ranking of undergraduate universities. The rest are a joke.

And Hoo’s #1? :)

I think Forbes killed their “college ranking” reputation when they first ranked colleges and put schools like “Centre College” above most top universities. Not that it’s necessarily incorrect to go against the tide, but Centre College in Kentucky? What? And West Point ahead of Harvard, Stanford, Yale, etc.? And that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to weird placements.

This ranking could make sense depending on what its purpose is (e.g. Washington Monthly’s ranking focuses on colleges that do the most public good), but it definitely isn’t a credible overall ranking.

I don’t know what Forbes’ criteria were but I CAN see West Point ahead of HYPS. It Does depend on the criteria used but you DO get a top notch education from the Academies.

who cares about Forbes? Berkeley ranks higher than UCLA in every other ranking.

More to the point: There’s no way to accurately rank colleges.

Why except US News? They’re all a joke.

Truer words were never spoken.

A red Alfa Spyder convertible? My Dad used to have one.

It’s not like this has never happened before. UCLA outranked Berkeley on THEQS one year as well. UCLA is currently ranked higher by the Taiwanese HEEACT.

It’s merely uncommon and hasn’t happened on USNWR (which is the ranking most people care about).

EDIT: Also, I’d have to admit Forbes’ ranking seems pretty bad.

UCLA was also ranked a notch higher than berkeley by highimpactuniversities (which seems to unfortunately have been taken down now.) People seem to be guided by some invalid sort of logic like “if UCLA is greater than berkeley, then the ranking is flawed” which is really grounded by saying “if the rankings don’t agree with my preconceived notions, and aren’t USNWR, they’re illegitimate”

all rankings are jokes imo.

When you integrate the Peer Assessment + Counselor Assessment to this ranking, the order will be near to standard. That’s why I’m a believer of school prestige rating.

Who cares? Rankings fluctuate, the bottom line is that both are excellent schools in amazing locations.

They are probably the best two public schools in the country.

Berkeley, for right or wrong, is viewed on the east coast as a bit more prestigious.

On campus, I hear the name Berkeley quite often. Conversely, I never really hear the name UCLA very often. Berkeley professors are always at my school holding lectures and sitting on panels and what not.

But the true separation between the two is negligible, at best.

I’ve always considered UCLA as Berkeley’s extension, so I don’t want any competition to exist between them, actually.

Wasn’t UCLA once the southern branch of UC (when Berkeley was the only UC)? It still copies Berkeley in its colors (Yale blue vs. ‘UCLA blue’), its mascot (bears vs. bruins), etc. Someone on this forum once referred to UCLA as the annoying little brother who always wants to tag along with his cool big brother. I thought that was apt. :p
