Hello-
I was wondering if anyone could tell me how UCLA is viewed on the East Coast of the U.S. I know here in the west, UCLA is viewed as pretty prestigious. Does the same hold true on the east? I'm just curious..

I would say it’s very well respected. I live in NC and know two people from my school who are going there next year. They are both taking on massive amounts of student loans to go. One girl signed her $35k loan just last week. A good friend of mine who wants to go into medicine is picking it over UNC-CH, despite the extra cost.

They are nuts too.

I live on the east coast and I would say it’s well-respected. I don’t know how much job managers view but as ordinary person, I think it’s pretty prestigious.

Do a lot of students over there apply to California schools, particularly UCLA? I know on the east UNC is really well respected, but unfortunately, not many people recognize or are familiar with the school here (southern California). Is it viewed as being impressive for job/employers? I was thinking of moving East after I graduate, New York City in particular.

well respected. For consulting and finance in New York however, it’s not seen as an elite school and a step below the northeast and midatlantic privates (Columbia, Dartmouth, Duke, Hopkins, Cornell, Williams) . But this is very subjective as you can imagine. I’m basing this off of how my company and others recruit.

If i were instate, i wouldn’t choose UCLA over UNC. But that’s mostly because i place a high value on cost/indebtedness. Other’s place a higher value on a beautiful campus or an exciting life in a vibrant city.

According to this Gallup poll, UCLA was indicated as being as ‘best/second best’ university 3% of the time (which places it at rank 7; and ties it with Michigan and Duke) That’s slightly lower than Berkeley at 4% (which places it at rank 5; and ties it with Princeton and Notre Dame.)

3% is pretty prestigious. With regard to the lesser known ivies, Penn’s only 2%, and Columbia, Cornell, Darmouth, and Brown are only 1%

Some people try to say that UCLA is only prestigious due to it’s basketball, but i don’t think that’s true. In the words of Earl Watson:

No offense Goldenboy :D

The “public” knows about as much about colleges as the Jaywalker all-stars would. Seriously, you have to do MUCH better than that. Realistically–not much difference in undergrad academics.
