UCLA Regents Scholarship

does anyone know what it takes (numbers-wise and ec-wise) to be invited for a regents scholarship??

The regents scholarship is nonsense. I didn't get nominated for one even though I had a 1580, was valedictorian, and got into HYPSM.

Another person in my school who had a 1420, ranked #10, and rejected by HYPSM got a regent's scholarship.

So it's a random process really.

rooster08, don't you have to commit to the school to get a regents scholarship?

No they actually offer it to you once you are accepted. In my classmate's case, they offered the scholarship before admissions decisions were even handed out, so he knew he got in before all the other UC applicants.

"Selection criteria [for Freshman Applicants] vary from year to year depending upon the applicant pool," according to UC. Transfer applicants require a GPA of 4.0 in all coursework (and must enter UCLA as a junior transer from a California community college). Invitation to compete for the scholarship is in early February. They will look at:

student's personal statement
letters of rec (they will request if necessary)
extracurricular activities
overall academic potential

There are two more listed scholarships from UCLA--the Alumni Scholarships and Dr. Ralph J. Bunche Freshman Alumni Scholarships.

In terms of statistics, it is not listed.

rooster, did u get into H, Y, P, and M also? or just S? just wondering

rooster08, that sucks for you man-that wasnt fair.

well i was just wondering about the regents cuz its so prestigious. do they call u for an interview or no?

thanks for all the replies

"rooster, did u get into H, Y, P, and M also? or just S? just wondering"

I got into all of them, and I currently attend S.

Syawn: I think Regents is pretty random. Maybe the reason I didn't get it was because I didn't put that much effort in my UC essays. If you don't recieve it, don't sweat it. It's only like 2,500 anyways.

thats awesome rooster. i thought regents was full tuition?

hey whats M-MIT?

it is, as well a parking, guaranteed housing (but housing isn't paid for), and priority enrollment.

is there a required interview?

Regents is only full tuition if you qualify financially. Otherwise, if you are rich or middle class, it is about a $2,500 honorary scholarship

Like rooster said, the regents process is pretty much random. For UCLA, there is no interview for the regents scholarship- I'm not 100% certain but I think the only UC regent scholarship that requires an interview is UCB. I know for LA they give at least $5500 no matter your financial situation. Parking is guaranteed but you still need to pay for it, housing you pretty much get whatever your first choice is (still need to pay), and you get priority enrollment for 12 units which is good for about 3 classes. The rule of thumb is that if you get an invitation from la or cal to apply for the regents, youre in- and you dont need to commit to get either scholarships.

Well here's UCLA's regents site if you want the official words:
<a href="http://www.fao.ucla.edu/uclascholarships/regents.html%5B/url%5D">http://www.fao.ucla.edu/uclascholarships/regents.html</a></p>

Syawn, I think you asked about Cal's info on their forum too and their info is at:
<a href="http://students.berkeley.edu/fao/Scholarships/RCSscholars.html%5B/url%5D">http://students.berkeley.edu/fao/Scholarships/RCSscholars.html</a></p>

I think your chances of getting it is random if, for like UCLA, they pick 800ish students to apply and give it to only 100, some of which will attend a HYPSM school as oppose to UCLA to begin with but again, it seems like a random process and good luck!

wow thank u so much for the info jyancy!!

well my heart wont break if i dont get regents, but im just very curious about it

I just received the regents scholarship for the fall 2005 quarter at UCLA. IF anybody has any questions, I will be more than happy to answer them

I received the regents scholarship for both cal and la, so ill tell you guys what i know about the scholarships and the process. For la, you get 5500$honorarium, guaranteed parking and housing, priority enrollment(which is very important), as well as membership in the Regents Scholar Society. The top 1.5% of candidates are invited to apply and must write an essay and submit 2 letters of rec. As for berkeley, you get the guranteed housing and 1000$ and membership in RCSA. You must interview for Berkeley and letters of rec are optional (i didnt submit any). Both are really prestigious, and helpful in providing unique opportunities for scholars. Also, membership in the RSS and RCSA is HUGE, because they really provide a great deal of services and provide a great support framework. And as far as being invited to compete for these scholarships, i think as long as you have over 1400+, 4.2+ UC GPA, good essays and ecs, youll be competitive. Keep in mind this is just based on personal experience, so take it with a grain of salt.

congrats on both regents acceptances. Where r u going to go?

Thanks dbjranger. Congrats on your regents acceptance as well. I chose UCLA over Berkeley for a variety of reasons. Prestige was not a factor because they are both exceptional universities. It essentially came down to feel and atmosphere for me (plus the money and priority enrollment:) ), and for me UCLA was just a better fit.

Have u decided if you're going to live on or off campus. If so, what housing arrangements are u looking at. I chose the house, suites, and plaza in that order. Have u heard the best housing for transfer students? R u a transfer student?
