UCLA Regents Scholarship

Is everyone here talking about freshmen regent scholarship? b/c I think there was another thread earlier about Regent scholarship for transfers. This is probably why there's some discrepancy in the info ppl have been giving.

Anyway, for Freshman admits (like me), RSS sure treated us nicely. Very, very nicely. I think going to the overnight stay program and then the reception on Honors Day really influenced me when I was trying to decide between UCLA and Cal (where I wasn't offered regents)...it was like, "wow, UCLA loves me, and Cal...could care less about me." haha, yes, what can I say? It appealed to my vanity. ;-)

And my housing order was res halls, plaza, suites. I like people.

Yeah darkling, I think there was some confusion lol. Just to clear it up, I'm a freshman regents scholar. Oh and I chose on-campus housing/plaza.

Hey guys. I was invited to apply early to UCR and be considered for the Regents Scholarship. I just found out that I got in and I got the scholarship - at UCR it covers full tuition for 4 years. But I don’t want to go to UCR!!! i want to go to cal or LA - does anyone know if you can transfer the scholarship to other UC’s?

2 year bump…and No, you cannot, or else I’d have 2 full rides here.

Also, you can’t even turn in your application this early, unless you’re talking about that Highlander Scholar dealy, which doesn’t mean you get the Regent’s/Chancellors. Riverside doesn’t even give admissions until February.

yeah i’m talking about the highlander scholars. i applied in late August and my admission letter said that i get the regen’ts scholarship. what i meant was does this in any way increase my chances of getting the scholarship to cal or LA? did you find out about the scholarship after applying for the regular admission program?

Hmm, I guess they’re doing something different this year, because I don’t think anyone got any response from Riverside until February. I found out about my scholarship when I got my decision. Congratulations.

thanks but i really wish i got it for ucla. what was your record like? right now i have straight A’s, all the AP classes my school offers, and two extra-cirriculars that i’ve done for four years. my SAT is pretty average though… what did you do to go above and beyond and earn the scholarship?

Lol, two year bump. That’s the longest I’ve seen..

perhaps i can shed some light on this. regents is not that special. it is in fact even a bit random. there are some fairly bright students in regents, and there are some not so bright ones.

factors such as race, socioeconomic background may indeed play a role in regents since there are quite a few fellow regents “scholars” that i feel are rather undeserving given their high school record who also happen to be urm but mostly east asian urms such as vietnamese, filipino, hmong, etc.

as for myself, i just have test scores (perfect except for sat i where i lost 10 points) and grades (val.) and some mild extracurriculars that i was in for a few years. i am just your typical slacker who gets good test scores student. i fail at most other stuff academic. nothing too special other than my testing ability.

most of the regents are probably more top heavy on teh extracurriculars than me and not so much on the academics. basically just a bit better than your average ucla student but with a more interesting background. i have certainly met quite a few strange people in regents with very unique interests. hell, we even have a scholar who is apparently borderline ■■■■■■■■ here because he has a strange obsession/fetish with “linguistics.”

oh and at scholars day and the overnight stay program, eat as mcuh as you can cause ucla will love you only until you accept it. cause the amount of nice food events drops a lot once you submit your SIR. well, there are still a few, but none quite so grand as scholars day. but regents is nice. just be sure to use it to its max and you’ll be fine. and please, don’t be an annoying ***** asking about everything and trying to use others to get ahead. i see too many idiots like taht in regents, and it is seriously a bit annoying.

oh and bring a backpack to teh induction ceremony and jack some naked juiced or odwalla. and choose new york steak with mushrooms. it is very good.

“oh and bring a backpack to teh induction ceremony and jack some naked juiced or odwalla. and choose new york steak with mushrooms. it is very good.”

yes!!

ok, perhaps i have exaggerated, but if you don’t get it, don’t worry. regents is a bit random in my opinion, and the definition of top .5% of applicants is so arbitrary.

does it cover the entire costs of attending, including room and board, books etc. or just tuition?

Tuition only

Well, some schools, like Irvine, give you tuition plus a stipend(~$1500) for books and other expenses. UCR is filled with a bunch of cheapskates that only give tuition.

if you dont require financial aid, you get an annual $5,500 honorarium that goes into your tuition, and it gets distributed evenly throughout the three quarters

lol regents scholarship is not a random selection thingy
whoever says that is just being jealous

are you sure spam? I don’t remember them offering that to me when I was looking at acceptances (2006)

Ya, they gave me a couple thousand more than my tuition at Irvine. Riverside only gave me the exact amount of tuition

doest getting regents scholar invite mean ur in th eschool?

^ pretty much
