UCLA Regents vs. UCSD Chancellor Scholarship

Hi. I know many may have seen similar threads to this, but I recently received the UCSD Chancellor's scholarship along with a UCLA Regents scholarship. Can anyone tell me the merits of any of those two and which would benefit me more?

UCLA Regents is better. Regents is the highest award you can get, and Chancellor’s is the second highest. I know you get a scholarship and perks like parking and priority class registration.

go to UCLA, lol

(coming from a UCSD student)

unless your major is a science (or something like bio engineering), because we’re ranked higher…if not, UCLA is an awesome school

chococookie,

You are incorrect. Chancellor’s scholarships is above Regent’s. For Chancellor’s you get 5k a year for four years up to 20k, [Chancellor’s Scholarships for Entering Freshmen](http://www.ucsd.edu/current-students/finances/financial-aid/types/scholarships/freshmen/chancellors-scholarships.html). For Regents at UCSD you only get 2k a year for a total of 8k, [Regents Scholarships](http://www.ucsd.edu/current-students/finances/financial-aid/types/scholarships/freshmen/regents-scholarships.html).
Looking at UCLA Regents, it says freshmen regents have a 4 year scholarship and are considered for a $2000 honorarium, http://www.fao.ucla.edu/uclascholarships/regents.html</a>, still significantly less than Chancellor’s Scholarship.

Richzz - Regents IS the highest award, regardless of the honorarium. At any UC, Regents is the most prestigious award that is given to prospective students. At UCSD, the Chancellor’s Scholarship is second to that, awarded to students with financial need, and thus offers more money than the Regents scholarship. Regents is still the most prestigious in terms of an award, not necessarily scholarship money.

maylix,

It is not. There are more Regents than Chancellors scholars at UCSD at least.

How many Chancellor’s scholars are there? The Chancellor’s scholarship isn’t entirely merit-based, so academically outstanding applicants with no financial need cannot qualify.

In any case, it says so right on the page that the Regents is the most prestigious scholarship awarded to undergraduate applicants.

Richzz, I apologize if I’m wrong. I just know that for Riverside and Berkeley Regents is the most prestigious award.

The most desirable scholarship at UCSD is perhaps the Jacobs School of Engineering Scholarship. It offers fullride for four years with the usual privileges, is totally merit based, and is limited in number. People offered the Jacobs Scholarship are typically those who have a very good chance of getting into HYPSM.
The second most desirable scholarship at UCSD is Regents as it also offers fullride with privileges for students who have financial need.

sunfish,

Regents does not offer a full ride. It only gives you 2k a year for 4 years for a total of 8k, [Regents Scholarships](http://www.ucsd.edu/current-students/finances/financial-aid/types/scholarships/freshmen/regents-scholarships.html). Chancellor’s Scholars receive 12k more money over the 4 years, just because you may not have heard of Chancellor’s doesn’t make it less prestigious than Regents. Make sure you research and can back up your claims before spilling out incorrect information.

The information is not incorrect…Regents IS the most prestigious scholarship at any UC. Quote from the Regents page: “The Regents Scholarship, based on academic excellence, is the most prestigious scholarship awarded to UC undergraduate students.”

And it DOES offer a full ride for students with financial need. I am being offered a full ride to both Davis and LA with Regents. It doesn’t mean this scholarship alone is covering my CoA, but it covers the rest of the costs after the grants are applied. My costs are not covered completely at UCSD because I was awarded the Chancellor’s, not Regents there.

Richzz89,
You’re misinformed. Regents pays 100% after subtracting the family contribution. When I said people with financial need, I meant people with zero or little family contribution.
There is no question Regents is financially more attractive than Chancellor’s. Is it more prestigious? You have to decide.
Also, UCSD Regents has three more perks that Chancellor’s doesn’t have: choice of college, Regents Research Initiative for freshmen and extended library borrowing privilege.
Regents is merit based whereas Chancellor’s is combination of merit, financial need, and disadvantaged background. I’d assume that if a person is qualified for both Regents and Chancellor’s, he/she will be given Regents and not Chancellor’s.

Richzz89,
I just look at the link in your post. Apparently either you only read the first few lines of that page or you don’t understand its content.

Translation: UCSD will give you 100% free money to meet your financial need for four years.

Your right. I didn’t read the the rest of links. My apologies.

Actually, the Jacobs Scholars award is still the most prestigious because it offers full tuition regardless of financial need status and pays for tuition, housing, and over $5,000 more in addition costs a year. Totaling about $115,000 dollars over 4 years.
Plus additional research, housing, class registration, and graduate library perks.
In addition to this, all Jacobs scholars are ALSO regents scholars, so they also receive the $8,000.

eh I wish I was smart enough to receive a full ride at UCSD. By the way, how many people received Regents this year? I heard it was 1 percent.

UCSD gives only 12 Chancellor scholarships a year

I got one, and probably will SIR to UCSD.
Other colleges where I got accepted: UCB, UCLA, UCD, UCI, CalPoly SLO, wait listed CalTech

While I would agree that the Jacobs Scholars award is seemingly more attractive, it is essentially regents with a guaranteed full ride. I would consider them one and the same; regents is still the most prestigious award given at all UCs :P.
