I received my official rejection just now. I was so sure i had got in.

As of right now i can:

-Complete the full housing application
-Saw my major (second choice) on myucla, then it turned into the white bar
-Make a bruin card
-When i go to register for fall 2011 classes it just says "term is not activated yet" or w/e (idk if it was always like that)

I have no idea why i could have been rejected...

Anthropology B.A.
GPA: 3.4
TAP
IGETC
4.0 in major prep

The one single reason i feel i might have been rejected is because one of the four anthro prereqs was not offered at my school.

So my question is, do you think that was the reason i was rejected/is that a strong basis for an appeal letter?

or do you think that is something they might have known already?

The course was:

Anthro 33 - Culture and communication (at UCLA)

Can someone also confirm that the course is not a UCLA only course and other people at other CCs were able to take it?

Culture and communication? i have a 3.5 and got in as an anthro major… the closest thing to culture and communication at my CC (cerritos college) is anthropology of language and culture and i took it last semester… i know of someone that got into ucla last year and he hadn’t taken that class and he got in with pretty much the same stats as you… so i don’t know why they didn’t accept you :/

Call UCLA! if you find the right person they WILL tell you why exactly you weren’t accepted. I think you should try to appeal if you really want UCLA and not so much the other schools you were accepted to.

But, if are happy with your other options, send your SIR that way.

I’m really not happy with the other choices. If i dont get in through an appeal, i will stay another year at my CC. I hope the prereq is the reason because my school and 4 others (i checked before registering for spring) id not offer the course.

Are there any anthro majors that were able to take all 4?

Also, are there any rejected students that can access their housing application completely?

Keep your head up. I always like to think of it as what the universe wants for you, and sometimes its not what we want.

and to twistnswif, i dont think its nice to say things like “its not really surprising you got rejected” because the average anthro gpa was a 3.5, and thats why its an average. There are going to people accepted with gpas higher and lower than that.

^ how is that not being nice? Im not being mean or nice, im just stating the facts. So what if the average gpa for anthro is 3.5, so does that mean if you have a near a 3.5 your pretty much garuanteed into one of the most prestigious universities in the country? All Im saying is with a 3.4 you shouldn’t expect to get in right off the bat, its pretty much a hit or miss. And being stubborn to accept that is pretty sore loser-ish. If he had a 3.8+ and got rejected thats a different story.

i highly doubt that is the reason. that class isn’t offered at all the community colleges and the ones that do offer it, offer it every other semester or every other year.

I’m so sorry to hear about your rejection, but for some reason, it just doesn’t add up.
Most schools do not offer/have an equivalent course to Anthropology 33 which should not be counted against you. They only “play that card” when those pre-reqs are offered.

The thing with calling Admissions is that most of the time they have student workers and they might only know what I know for example. I didn’t know/don’t know if UCLA gives you the exact reason why you were denied, and I know that sucks. Today, I had to go to Murphy Hall (Graduate Division specifically) and the first thing you see if you enter through the main front doors to the right is Undergraduate Admissions, I saw the worker sleeping, :/. These are the people you trust…ugh, yeah…

The only thing I can think of now is the GPA, but I do know someone last year who got into Anthropology with a 3.2.

Thanks Rhee, yeah i couldnt help but get my hopes up when people around me were getting in for GPAs around the 3.1-3.2 area. We’ll see what the admissions people say haha.

@OP the exact same thing happened to me, but I’m a philosophy major with a 4.0. I called them today and asked them why I was rejected, and they said it was because I wasn’t concurrently enrolled in another CC to take the pre-reqs that weren’t offered at my school. I am going to appeal for sure.

Wow, i’m surprised they rejected you, even with a 4.0! I wish you the best of luck! I hope they don’t act stubborn in their decision and will look past it.

Couple of questions for you:

-Can you access your housing application on URSA?
-Is the prereq you dont have, a prereq that isnt offered at other CCs?
