Perhaps some undisclosed status or hook?

If you guys really have 4.2 UC weighted GPA, you should appeal!

The problem with the UC GPA is that it is a 'capped' GPA. The application
calculates it, but unfortunately it doesn't tell you what it is. So most
people don't really know what it is and they calculate it wrong.

UC adds extra points only for four year long AP or college classes.
If you have more AP's they don't coiunt for any extra points, but
you do take a hit if you end up with B's or C's in your AP's.
Your UC GPA is claculated using only your 10th/11th year grades.

Let's take an example of someone with A's in all classes.
You take the average high school load of 6 classes
each in 10th/11th grades. Four of those classes each year are a-g
i.e. excludes PE, leadership, public speaking etc.
If you have all A's, you get four extra points for the AP's.
Average that over your eight a-g classes, you get to your
theoretical maximum of 4.5 UC GPA.

In many cases, you end up with more than 4 a-g classes
each year so your UC GPA gets diluted to 4.4 even with all A's.

You'll need to claculate the UC GPA in a similar fashion based on
your semester grades. Remember that a B in a semester wipes
out extra point fopr an AP in a semester. If you have a 3.7,
you probably have some B's or worse. They can eat into your
eight semesters (four years) worth of extra points. So your
UC GPA may be lower than what you think it is.

This is too complicated, isn't it?

It doesn't matter. The average uncapped GPA is 4.25, so even if they didn't stop at 8, they still have reason to mad, considering they're about average at GPA, and way above average on their SATs.

and my stats

UC GPA: 4.0
SAT 1: 2110
SAT 2: 1400
EC: Started two businesses, president of club, Basketball
Essays: clear passion shown with two of them, and a sentimental one for the open-ended
Courseload: 46 A-G semesters, 8 APs, honors for the rest that were available

Hey, if it makes you guys feel any better, I know some really strong candidates for grad schools who didn't get in. Myself included.

This is one pity party I condone. :p

REJECTED
4.1 UC GPA
2200 SAT I
800 IIC/ 710 Chem
Good ECS
National Merit Commended 98th percentile

9 APs + whole bunch of honors classes
Edit: I'm in state

Wow, that's unbelievable, especially when I see these people with borderline UCI stats getting in.

im sorry. this is all reallllllllllllllly *ed up. unbelievably considering im taking this pretty bad right now. it's not that ucla/college was my life. it's the fact that all these ppl are getting in without doing 1/100th of what i did. its all very disappointing that i woke up at 4.30 to be on the swim team while they slept in or the fact that i went to acadeca practice 2.30pm-10.30pm everyday + summer + weekends and basically gave up my life for a year. orrr the fact that they didn't give a * about sats (laughed it off) and scored 100-200 below me. and the essays... don't get me started.

very very confused. but it's not the end of the world, so i'll be ok. plus, that's life. might as well get used to it.

what do you mean daderoo?

are you kidding me about the 4.25 uncapped???

my uncapped was 4.38 or something

oh and i didn't include some other important stats including the fact hat i took around 10 community college courses (and not the stupid ones... astronomy, programming logic, etc) throughout high school and middle school. 8th ****ing grade.

It's definitely worth appealing. All the people who were inferior to you that got in were lucky to get the committee they got. Appealing means your application is spread out even more, which obviously increases your chances.

Please, are you kidding? ONE B in freshman year? Senior class president? Who cares about test scores? UCs put really heavy weight on how hard you work, not how well you can take a test, though it is a less-important factor. It's not like less than 2000 is a train wreck. Jeez, lay off. She was trying to make the guy feel better, since UC admissions are obviously random.

Hey, just wanted to throw out something;

maybe you guys should consider major/college applied to

i know that college of engineering accepted like almost everyone
while college of letters and sciences rejected a lot of people.
So along with your rejection also post ur major/college applied to

i applied to undeclared life science

just extending my previous post, i applied to college of engineering and i got my "recomendation letter" like a week before the desicions were posted online. So, i am not sure if ucla college of engieering (my major is bioengieering) is any good, but i certianly think its not competitive as College of Letters adn Sciences from where i know a lot fo my firends got rejected. Maybe anyone want to tell me if ucla college of engieering (for bioengieering) is any good? or comeptitive?

and just an update on my situation.... i found my transcript from the end of 11th grade and it turns out that i have a uc-capped gpa of around 3.9 (ahhhhh), an unweighted of 3.6154, and a uc weighted uncapped of 4.38. yeah so definitely changed things around a bit. i guess i tried too hard to challenge myself. anywho..... another reason is elc (i didn't reply to the mailing they sent for score release during the summer)... so basically ucla saw a 3.9 gpa and thought...oh. big deal.

sucks a lot though... considering i have one of the most challenging coursework in my class and still rank in the top 2 percent. but uc's don't see rank right. yup. screweeeddd in the butt i was. lol.

but nyaghooti and visccistude u guys are gonna get into some decent east coast private, i think?

my teacher recs weren't too great :-/
my counselor rec was ok

i applied to:
ucla
ucb
uci (got in)
ucsd
emory
johns hopkins
carnegie mellon
wellesley
washington university, st. louis
usc

i sure hope ur right hideANDseek

I wouldnt really worry about not getting into UCLA, unless you really wanted to go there. If you are overqualified and still got rejected then you will probably still get into either Berkeley or San Diego. I also got rejected from UCLA with a 4.0 UCGPA a 780 on the US History SAT 2 and a 750 on the Math 2 C and I am in ELC. I applied for Bioengineering though which is one of the hardest majors. So far I have been accepted into Irvine and USF but Berkeley is my number one UC that I wish to attend. I am just curious if anyone recieved a supplemental ap from Berkeley because they sent me one and I have never really heard of that happening before.

hmm according to the rejection letter online, it seems like the acceptance is close to 10% this year....
