is that overall? or for a certain college. because im sure letters and sciences has a lower acceptance than engineering

tat is overall i believe....42k applicants..i would assume that should be everyone..not just for 1 college O_O

Uh....bioeng and all the other engineering majors are considered impacted and are generally regarded as more competitive than L&S. Maybe this year we're seeing a reversal? Sucks, cuz I need to transfer from engineering to L&S

hmm. ONE thing i REALLY dont get. WHY does ONLY Letters and Sciences Have HONORS PROGRAM, while others DONT. Please let me know if you know. Thanks.

Maybe UCLA wants real people as opposed to academic automatons... don't blame 'em

"WHY does ONLY Letters and Sciences Have HONORS PROGRAM, while others DONT?"

Because, above a certain lowly level and below the genius-geek level, engineering, say, is the same for everybody. Even then, there are no doubt options available, perhaps math with more or somewhat less theoretical orientation.

In contrast, in certain L & S fields, especially at the freshman and sophmore level, it can make a difference if the true students are seperated from the party animals.

UCLA is truly random... i know about 5 people from my school who didnt break 2000 on the SAT and got in, keep in mind though they all had perfect GPA's. who really knows what UCLA looks for. IT is said that UC's look primarily at test scores and GPA, and the other stuff (ec's, essays) matter but not as much. In many cases that ive seen, its the other stuff that gets kids in...but who really knows.

No, they have that many spots, but they accept over 9000, because not everyone who is accepted will attend. The actual acceptance rate is about 21-22% I think.

but nyaghooti and visccistude u guys are gonna get into some decent east coast private, i think?

Funny, I have an unweighted GPA of 3.6 as well. I applied to some really competitive east coast colleges, and hoping out of luck one of them will accept me, thinking I'll just attend a UC if I get rejected from all of them...but I didn't expect rejection from UCLA geez. Also I think I majorly underrated the importance of GPA. It seems to be BY FAR the most important factor in college decisions among the top schools this year.

Btw I love how my CC ID was spelled.

nyaghooti: I know how you feel man.

Oh really? What about all those people (such as myself) who were rejected because of their "low" GPA? I worked by butt off, taking 4 AP classes my junior year when everyone else took three, and ended up with a 3.8 UCGPA for high school GPA. According to UCLA (the average GPA of which is around 4.3), I should have studied more! Oh wait, but don't forget those SATs that I gotta spend hours and hours to study! Let's see...oh that's right...I have to have many extra-curriculars too...nope one or two won't suffice. Honestly there are only 24 hours in a day. But oh wait, I have to exhibit a passion for what I do, i.e. awards and the such. Nopes spending about 15 hours a week in marching band is actually pretty meaningless. Managing two school clubs as president is worthless because I don't show "depth of interest" right? Playing piano for eight years and the awards I've won don't count because everything I do previous to high school does not matter right? So of course I'm not a REAL person, but an academic automaton, as you so nicely put it. Yup. I'm a machine.

i know ill get over this. but its so tragic. the most ambitious of people get hurt in the end... did you also get ambitious with challenging yourself thinking they'll understand you chose the challenge over the grade or just discounted value of the gpa (concentrated on ec's, etc)?

btw vissi... we're very very similar in stats. very. cept u got a highh ass sat score (good job)

k just kidding. misread...ur better loll

we should keep in touch. tell me ur plans and which colleges you get accepted into.

vissi...what's ur uncapped weighted gpa? just wondering

Hehe you posted while I was in the process of editing and adding more stuff. Yeah everyone said "challenging schedule is more important than all As." It's bs. Most colleges would take a person with 2 AP classes with all As than a person with 4 AP classes and 3 Bs any day.

Uncapped weighted GPA? No idea; school doesn't weigh. I calculated my 10th 11th grade GPA using UC system and it came out to be about 3.8. I got my best grades in 1st semester of 12th grade but UCs don't look at it. :(

Sure I'd love to keep in touch. PM me. I hope you'll get into some of your top choices.

4.0 weighted uc
3.8 unweighted

4.4 normal weighted

2220 SAT
800 Math iic 750 bio

EC: President of chess, academic team, national debate awards, hospital 200 hours, president of Key Club, already completed 2 years of college math beyond Calc D (now on advanced linear algebra), internship 2 years at UCSD lab

apped in engineering rejected, i really don't care since i got into UMich engineering +ross though...berkeley is what i'm looking for now

still a bit of a shock though

Hao, you're so bitter.
Rightly so, of course.

Are you referring to me? I'm not sure if Hao is a person's name..

HEY, don't reveal my secret identity!!

On this forum...I have no name.

supsupsup: that is really strange that UCLA would reject you, but based on your stats, you would have no problem getting in another college of an equal or better caliber.

The only thing that bothers me of the UCLA rejection is that it may be an indicator for my chances at Cal engineering EECS. I mean, UCLA's EECS is a joke compared to it and I didn't get in. At the same time, I did get into Umich EECS which is ranked top 5 so now this really isn't making any sense.

Bingo. I really don't think I'm getting anywhere else now. UCLA is looking pretty good when compared to UCI!

Who wants to go to UCLA anyway, it's too crowded and wayyy too overrated.

vici thanks for your support. Yeah it is kind of a stinger..but hey, life goes on.
