UCLA Requirements

On the letters and science AP credit website, it lists requirements that are exempt from taking AP tests and passing with a 3, 4, or 5, but it doesn't explain at all what the requirements are. Are they part of the general education or something?

My chemistry teacher, an alumni from UCLA, mentioned that the freshman english class is time consuming, where he had to write a plethora of essays and read at least one book a week. I asked a friend about the college english classes, and she has informed me that the exemption from the AP Language test, getting a four on it, does not exempt me from this rigorous class. On the website however, it states that entry level writing and english composition writing 1 is met by the test. Looking back on past posts by other members of this board, there appears to be a english composition 3 class that they are REQUIRED to take by sophmore year. I'm guessing this is the class my chemistry teacher talked about, but I'm not sure. So basically, am I out of this time consuming class, or do I still need to take the class during summer school so that in the Fall year I can be left to focus on my actual major?

On another note, I have for the past two years, take one class of japanese in sophmore summer and junior summer at a Pasadena Community College. Was this worthless (academically, since I enjoyed the class and language), and would I have been better off taking english? Or does this fufill my foreign language requirement at UCLA, whatever that is, since it's not clearly explained?

Most of these questions will be answered when you attend summer orientation as they go over everything completely before you register on the third day. My daughter got out of all English classes by scoring 4 on the AP Eng. test. You still have a writing II requirement but she got that covered by being enrolled in a year long “freshman cluster” which covers 3 GE’s and your writing II requirement. Her cluster is about global environment so she really has not had to take any English classes as a freshman.

As far as the language question, I am not sure. Hopefully someone will answer that for you. My daughter took the French placement test during orientation and was placed in French 3. So all she had to do was French 3 to have it over with. I am not sure what other languages you can test in and possibly test out of the requirement.

You can test out of the foreign laguage requirement for pretty much any mainstream foreign language. It seems like you’ll need to take Japanese 3 assuming that you remember everything and each of those courses are equivalent to one UCLA quarter / one year in high school (i.e., 1/3 of the elementary level).
