UCLA requires more class to transfer....

Hello everyone, I’m currently attending Pasadena City College majoring in Computer Science. I want to transfer to UCLA but I’ve noticed they require more classes to transfer than other UCs and it will take me longer than Spring 2018 to finish all those classes. I will be able to apply to transfer after completing other UCs transfer requirement by Spring 2018, but I sill want to go UCLA but what if I don’t get in? Am I taking those extra classes for nothing? Can I apply for a UC but not attend right away until I find out if I get into UCLA maybe half a year later?

Thank you!

Remember those classes are the credit you earn and will go with you to whatever school you are transferring to. So even if you get in UCI, those classes are still count towards your degree and save your time at UCI.

It will be easier to get them done at PCC.
Once you hit one of the UC’s you will be off and running. You will have a shorter amount of time to get decent grades; it’s a quarter system so ten weeks goes by really fast.

PCC will be less expensive, overall, and will help you to transfer.

Not really sure what you’re asking here. All UCs have the same deadline to apply for fall semester/quarter and notify accepted applicants around the same time in the spring. If you don’t get into UCLA and reapply it will be a year until you hear back the 2nd time.

As far as “not attend right away” the UCs don’t defer admission except in extraordinary circumstances like being called back into active-duty military from the reserves. You can see other situations where they allow it on the UC admission webpages.

hello there, I am also studying Computer Science at Pasadena City College. Given that I’m looking to transfer after this Spring 2017 semester, I am further along in this process I should be able to answer your questions.

If you have looked at the related courses for CS B.S. listed on assist.org for UC/CSU/PCC you’ll see that the recommended courses are very similar. Typically it’s:

Math 5A/B/C, 10, 55 and 22
Physics 1A/B/C
a combination of English 1A, 1B and either English 1C, Philo 25 or Phys Sci 2
and the CS courses of 2, 3A, 8, and 6.

Honestly, you can apply whenever you want with whichever courses you have already completed, but it is recommended that you finish the suggested courses above as it’ll make your application more competitive. So you would not be taking those classes for “nothing”. For example, the recommended courses for Cal Poly Pomona on assist.org exceed those recommended by UCLA so you could also enroll in more courses to allow yourself to have a wider range of schools to apply to.
If you are behind in your classes, I’d suggest Math Path or enrolling during the Summer and the newly reinstated Winter sesh. If you want to take more than the maximum units, you can petition to enroll in more courses. Follow the steps here: http://pasadena.edu/admissions-and-aid/admissions-and-records/petitions.php

The UC Application opens every Fall and delivers admission notifications (acceptances/rejections) in the Spring. Once you receive your admission results in the Spring, you have until the June 1st deadline to submit your SIR (Statement of Intent to Register) to declare that you are indeed attending the school. Since the next UC App. opens in the following Fall, you would not be able to “hold on” to your acceptance and you would have to re-apply again.
It is worth it to take more courses at PCC. The CS courses available are definitely not limited to the suggested curriculum on assist.org.

Anyways, best of luck, keep that GPA as close to 4.0 as you can and go above and beyond!
