So I got selected for an interview at UCLA TFT. It's a week from Saturday and I have no idea how to prepare. If anyone has gone through this process before, please give me some pointers!! Or general college interview tips...I don't even know what to wear!
I'm going for the undergrad program, as a transfer student. They only interview 30 people and they pick 15!! STRESS.
Thanks
Heather

Always wear formal attire for itneriews. As for the others, I dont know cuz I'm an econ major.

goodluck with you interview.

Yeah...very true...wear formal attire for sure with colors that compliment you well...you can never be overdressed for an interview!!!

Also, I have learned after going through so many interviews of this type in college that you just have to be yourself!!! There is a reason you were selected for this interview--and if you go in there and act confident but not arrogant and be yourself--you will be in great shape!

Finally, anticipate questions they may ask! For example, it seems like for most college-based interviews they always ask a question like "So why do you want to come to school here?" or "Tell us why you choose this major?" Of course these are general, but if you anticipate some of the questions they may ask, and think of what your answers would be, you'd be surprised how much it will help you!

Good luck!

what's your major, may i ask?

wigwambam - may you post your stats? I am going to apply for the program next year and i want to know my chances.

the best advice I ever got for an interview is to re-read everything you ever submitted because questions often come from whatever you have written....

my major is screenwriting. my stats?? um...i have a 3.7 gpa, but admission is based mostly on your writing samples (you have to submit part of a screenplay, critical film analysis, and personal essay, at least as a junior). i'd be entering as a transfer student from a community college/

also, let it be known that i have NO film background. i'm 26 and have been in a touring band since i graduated high school, took one screenwriting class and fell in love with it, told them honestly about my passion for it and my background. just be honest? i don't know. i was literally SHOCKED when they called me.

i'm applying for the school of TFT as well, (for theater) and when i was there for the auditions/interview i was talking to some of the theater students there they said that some people accepted had never even set foot into a theater before. i was shocked when i heard this, but i guess ucla just wants to be really diverse. if they think you've got good potential, they'll give you a shot no matter what your background in the area. apparently they really like what you've submitted so have confidence that you are at least somewhat good. and picking 15 out of 30 is still REALLY good chances! (for the program i'm applying to, they're only picking 12 out of over 200!)
so pointers:
attire: you want to look professional, but not like a buisiness woman. i suggest wearing some sort of black pants, somewhere between jeans and slacks (if that makes sense,) and a nice shirt, whether it be button up, or otherwise, no logo or anything. wear shoes that arent dirty, maybe flats or heels.
interview: now i don't know what your personality is but i assume you are somewhat outgoing based on the fact that you've been in a touring band for so long. make sure you keep eye contact and a smile, and answer questions completely and honestly. if you are honest, your passion will show through and they'll be able to see it.
based on the interview that i had to do, they will definitely ask you something along the lines of "why do you want to go to ucla?" so i suggest you browse the website a bit and find something about it that you really like, that's different from other schools. they love it when you know a lot about the school because it shows your interest and also shows that you're not just doing this interview on your way to inteviews for the other 93247 schools you're applying for.
like chappa said, re-read what you have submitted so it's fresh in your mind.. so if they say something like "now, why did you choose to add the character 'polly' into your screenplay?" you won't say, "polly who?" hahaha ok that was a really bad example, but you know what i mean.
oh! and for your major, i'm guessing they might ask who your favorite screenwriter is, so think of a few that you might like.
other than that, there isn't any way else to "prepare," so just be yourself!
good luck with the interview, and hopefully i'll be seeing you on campus this fall! =D

adriennevy - you ROCK!!! thanks for the INFO! do you have an idea of how many students they will be taking for their directing (theater) or designing (theater) program?

josh- i don't know how many they'll be accepting for those programs, i only know they'll be accepting 12 acting transfers because when we were there for auditions, someone asked. i don't know for sure how many people applied, so i'm going off of previous years stats.

here are some links for previous years stats so you can get a bit of idea. they don't completely break it down by directing, design, etc... but it give you at least some information.

UPDATE: I ****ING GOT IN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
details about the interview to come...it was totally relaxed and awesome.
I'm drinking champagne!!! YAY!!!!!

Congratulations wigwambam! Details!!! lol...

congratulations!

oh **** congrats

So...here's what happened.
Three people interviewed me. One woman and two men. The first thing they asked me was about my band, and all the crazy things we've done. I was so happy because that instantly made me comfortable. They made me feel really relaxed and totally laughed at all my jokes. I knew it was going well! I even made some low-brow comments about "defiling my body" (they asked about my tattoo). They ****ing ate it up! They loved the humor. Then they asked me to pitch them the screenplay I wrote. They also asked me if I were a boat, what kind of boat I would be. I have NO CLUE where I pulled this but I said: "I'd be a yacht that needs to be rowed. Because I've got a big personality and big dreams, but it took a lot of hard work to be this person." THEY LOVED THAT. I saw HIT 'EM w/the jokes, people. and RELAX! I'm so thrilled.
They did stump me with "what are your favorite lyrics you've ever written"; i couldnt think of anything but i guess it didnt matter. :)

Holy crap. Welcome to UCLA.

wigwambam...

found you by search, hope you still check here occasionally. I was just selected for and interview for the FTV department as well. I'm a transfer applicant, and I have about a week before the interview, and I'm totally stressed.

Think you could give me some pointers? I'm aiming more for the production track. Thanks!

Does anyone know when they usually call for an interview??? ( for the Undergraduate Film program at UCLA)
