it doesn't exactly say that they are paying for the trips but it sure makes it seem like it...

i guess that would make it seem like they are trying too hard. UCLA really knows how to kiss some ass

dude..you make it seem like you are lying about the money thing...you seem skeptical that they wrote an article like that.....please do not post on this thread as you seem a shady character not like the other people on this board

how do i seem skeptical about it? i was only responding to your statement that they didn't say they were paying for plane tickets in the article. don't you think that would tell the world that UCLA is trying to cover up from only getting 96 black people last year by saying that they are willing to pay for the black kids to travel and nobody else? i would see that as trying to hard, but also working in a progressive direction to show black people that they are wanted at UCLA and encourage them to matriculate. i don't know what your problem is, but if you don't believe me there's no need to accuse me of being a liar. just take it with a grain of salt and you can even ignore it if you wish but don't label me as shady because you have no evidence for anything you're saying.

black people are wanted but asians aren't.

do you think they would ever do this for white or asian people?

As much as I'd like to believe this is not a matter of race, I can't. One of my friends who is African American got into UCLA with barely a 3.4 or 3.5 weighted (with failing grades) and an extremely low SAT score - something like 1600. Many of my other White and Asian friends with 4.2 gpas and 2000+ SATs did not get in. All are from the same area, and so are mostly at an equal financial background. The African American had significantly fewer extracurriculars.

How do you explain this?

I'm not saying all African Americans were admitted in this way. Another one of my African American friends is up there with the 4.0+ GPAs and 2000+ SATs, and she did deserve to get in. In fact, I'm sure all of the admitted African Americans are qualified and will be quite successful at UCLA, but at the same time, I question the fairness of SOME of these decisions.

-Hagos (1 of 96)

Well, I'm African- American with a 3.9w and 1900+ SAT and I got rejected.
So, I'm pretty sure just being of another race isn't going to help all too much in the admissions process.

Are you implying you should have gotten in?

Your SAT is respectable but your GPA put you out of the running.

i think hes just saying that race doesnt help that much

My bad if that is the case.

these reverse discrimination threads revolve around the same thing same arguments....i think it has been decided that the holistic admissions policy is not good for anybody

yeah, i agree with alexinorbit. and DanielHagos, I was just making the point that race doesn't help that much. Trust me, I am not implying that I should have gotten in.

Actually, URMs such as blacks and latinos know the game very well. They make sure to mention their race in their essays. All the blacks and latinos I knew did that.

of course...they are cashing in on the stupid policies...heck...i would.....

UCLA is trying to compete for the most competitive black admits because many are turned off by it's school and it's low african american population. They don't do it for whites and asians because they dont need to, they just come anyway.

And maybe more african americans students got it because they were just stronger this year....

Well URM status didnt help me at alll when i applied as a Freshman (damn it) lol .. But i go to NYU Stern now so its all good.

African-American
i had 3.89 Uw 4.3 w
1490 sats
good recs
good ecs
Varsity in 3 sports

Donald Trump future business leaders
jr NAACP, etc

Althouggghh, i am far from less fortunate... my parents are both ivy league grads and very affluent.... so i can see why it wasnt a hook for me! But i got into UC Berkely so thats pretty weird

@ Tyler09, :/ It's a pretty freaking big increase in accepted African American students, I seriously doubt that it is in any way a result of an increased caliber of applicants.

See the issue is a little something called prop 209, which makes it illegal for race to be considered for the UCs, doesn't matter if you personally think that an applicant like ixjunitxi (sorry, you were just right there, hope you don't mind) should be accepted over a poor white or Asian applicant with exactly the same stats just because of the color of their skin, prop 209 doesn't care.

I personally am I not willing to immediately accuse UCLA of consciously practicing AA or condemn holistic admissions (admittedly partially because I got in under it) but I abhor affirmative action. I don't mind an increase in the number of African American students, so long as they are as qualified or more as everyone else and not there only because of AA.

Honestly, I feel AA is fine as long as the URMs are okay with it cuz it degrades themselves ( URMs) and not me. Besides, I think I would have been admitted even if AA was present, but of course I can't speak for the poor asians and whites who would really get screwed cuz I'm middle class.

^^^ what are you talkng about?? lol i feel bad?? i dont get it? If your asian or white and didnt get accepted....that means you were at the very BOTTOM of the entire applicant pool... in addition to you not having any hooks... i mean if you read the article 392 african americans were offered spots ....of that many about ....maybe 200 will enroll...that is NOTHING i dont get why people get so offended by UCLA offering 392 of about 11,500 spots !!
