I just finished my first year at my CC and I will apply to UCLA in November. I really, REALLY want to get accepted, but I also want to be real. What are my chances?

Essays: I'm thinking of writing about my desire to do research on human trafficking and drug cartels (It's true, not just feckless brown-nosing) and how I untimatly want to become a lawyer.

I'd appreciate an honest evaluation, especially anyone who got accepted as a sociology major. So far, I've only found 1 person and it scares me....

Hey, fellow soc major! I got in with a 3.62 with TAP.
You seem to have a fairly good chance. 3.5 is a bit low but it’s worth a shot. Remember, personal statements do count, and be sure to finish pre-reqs as soon as possible. Finish fall quarter/semester strong! Gotta keep that GPA up with an upward trend. Good luck

To be frank, I believe it would hurt your chances… It’s imperative you finish as many pre-reqs as possible. You can elaborate in the 3rd space on the application about why you didn’t fulfill that last pre-req. I had finished all pre-reqs b4 applying. Hope that helps!

How do you know this? Because everywhere I check, I says that you have until sprint to complete pre reqs. And also, I personally know someone who got in with a 3.2 into psychology major and had a pre req in spring, so Im rather skeptical about your information.

hi. i am a sociology major with a 3.79 and i got accepted with all my pre reqs before spring. i did not have calculus finished, but i have finished finite math in the fall. however, i was taking calculus in the spring, but i dropped it with a W and i am taking calculus again the summer. i have my final tmrw so i hope do well. i recommend finishing all the pre-reqs in the fall because if you do it late in the spring you have a very low chance of getting accepted. sociology is an IMPACTED major and this what the department advisor said and well you can’t switch into it either. in addition to that, i got all A’s on my pre-reqs. A- FINITE math, A- INTRO TO SOC etc. i have 105 units i have 1 B and 1 C’s from pre calculus and maybe a C in calculus and the rest are A’s. sorry for the bad grammar im trying to type it and study at the same time.

It say’s you have until spring to finish, however, it hurts your chances of getting in, greatly.

I’m giving you my person experience, and my best friend’s situation. We were going through the admission process together. A little more background info, we applied last fall and are starting our first year at UC’s this coming fall. They did say it was a competitive year.

My school took on massive class cuts last year (no, not a cheap excuse. Just wanting to explain my situation to the adcoms.) we went from having 8 stats classes to 3 for the spring of 2010. I did not have priority (at the time), so I couldn’t get into a class, not even as a crasher. Maybe explaining this will help, but I can only hope. I am aware of how impacted sociology is at ucla.

^Ain’t nothin’ but a thing UCLAudia, I’m not gonna have my Stats course done until Spring Semester and I’m TAP’ing for Psychology. Honestly I’ve taken it twice and bombed with an F and a D due to extinuating circumstances. This time around I’m taking it as Honors and intend to get an A in it because I think it’d show that the reason I did poorly the other two times WERE because of those extinuating circumstances and not due to a lack of ability.

^You too, you should be fine, your stats are way better than mine, GPA’s higher by about .3 and you have WAY more ECs. Not being able to TAP is unfortunate but not damning.

If there’s one bad thing about my school, it’s how we don’t offer tag for ucla. I hate it, really. But UCLA has some strange admissions trends. One minute, they admit someone with a 3.2 and no EC’s. The next, they admit someone with a 4.0 and 80 units under their belt. It’s scary how inconsistent they are :/
