UCLA Sororities

I know people have been slammed in the past on CC for asking about the reputations about the sororities and fraternities, but what do most people at UCLA think of them? Is it all about partying or..? I there lots of alcohol and drugs? Because that's what I am concerned about...

http://www.greekrank.com/uni/54/sororities/</a>
some are known for being classy while some are known for…you know.

do not ever use greek rank as a reference.

Be careful and wary of distractions.

Never use greekrank as a reference that website cannot be more bull-sh-it…

delta delta delta is totes friendly and great they will all love you no matter what

Well UCLA thinks of the greek life like all other schools… obnoxious but beautiful party-ers.
Sororities and fraternities is mostly about friendships and partying. There is a lot of drinking, a lot of smoking, drugs; yet I know few people in “top” fraternities who don’t drink and is still well respected.

As for reputations go, the “top” fraternity status has shifted DURING this year. SAE and ZBT were the top fraternities. This is where all your "bro"s are at. But I think a combination of social probation and the deuche-yness of the guys from those frats have brought their reputation down. The most talked about and loved fraternities currently are Sigma Chi, Beta, and maybe Sig Ep.

For sororities, the top houses where girls are perfect and barbie dolls would include Alpha Phi and Kappa Kappa Gamma. The other top houses are Delta Gamma and Kappa Alpha Theta; these are known as the more down to earth girls.
Just being completely honest, Kappa Kappa Gamma has a reputation for being mean-spirited and having a sense of ascendency. DG has a reputation for being “sluts”, although I don’t really see it.

there are drugs and there is partying but it’s easy to avoid that stuff if you choose to. Realistically this is not LMU, everybody doesn’t do hard drugs. A lot of people do smoke recreationally, but like i said you can easily avoid this if you so choose. I know quite a few people, including myself, who are a part of greek life but rarely party/drink. I think i went to maybe 4 parties last quarter but going greek was still a fantastic decision because when it comes down to it it’s not just about partying/hooking up(at least in my eyes). There is still plenty to do without drinking all the time

Not to hijack this thread but how welcoming/non-welcoming are UCLA sororities to stereotypically “nerdy” pursuits? I like anime and kpop and want to be able to be open about it if I’m in a sorority. I also wanna party hard but only maybe once or twice a week exempting dead week (I’ve heard Thursdays are big at UCLA? ) and study/be involved in other ECs the rest of the week - neither am I interested in heavy drinking/smoking. It’s more the community, fun, and support system that I’d be looking for if I decide to rush.

Based on what little scrolling I’ve done on the internet, I’m currently interested in Chi Omega :)

Is there usually space to move into a sorority house as a transfer, from another chapter?

UCLA’s top sororities are in this order: KKG, APhi, DG.
UCLA’s top fraternities are in this order: ZBT, SAE, SigEp, SigChi

Do these sororities take internationals?

Do these sororities take internationals?

most of this is pretty accurate.
chi omega is lame you don’t really hear about them. i thought they were shut down but no theyre still around.
I would add pi phi as top (no i am not a pi phi)
also would say the delts and lambda are good fraternities too. Not as top as SAE but chill fun guys.
lambda has a rep for being easygoing potheads and delts are the uber rich smart guys.

do you need letters of recommendation for the sororities at UCLA? i know that in the south they are a NECESSITY, the east doesn’t really care about them usually, not sure about the west though… thanks!!!

Disclaimer: I’m not in a sorority, I rushed for a couple days but dropped because I couldn’t see myself in Greek life.

Here’s a general overview of Greek/sorority life at UCLA from a current first year girl:

Greek life has a strong presence on campus - you can’t go five steps without seeing someone in Greek apparel. However, it’s very possible to make friends and have a great time without going Greek.

Yes, Greek life is mostly about partying. There are events with only your sorority, but most events are raids with frats or date parties. If you don’t drink, maybe you could manage to have a good time and make friends in a sorority but I can’t imagine you won’t feel out of place. They do have fundraiser things for their philanthropies but that’s pretty much only a front to pretend like they don’t only exist for socializing/networking.

It is essentially paying for friends and a social life, but that’s not to say it’s not worthwhile for some people. Lots of people have found their best friends through Greek life and socialize primarily with their brothers/sisters. People make fun of frats/sororities by calling them cults, which is honestly not too far from the truth.

Also, most sororities (not all) are superficial. During rush, they will be judging you based on your appearance. There is really no other way to explain why there is a disproportionate number of thin, blonde, White girls in most sororities. Whether that bothers you is your call.

Sorority rankings/reputations:

*btw if any of this comes off as racist I’m just referring to the stereotypes

Kappa Kappa Gamma - Typical sorority Barbie dolls. Nicer than you’d expect, though.
Alpha Phi - Cheerleaders and pretty Asians
Theta - Also Barbie dolls, more brunettes and party a little harder than Kappas
DG - petite pretty girls, many of them are girls who didn’t get into the top 3 but it’s still a top tier
Chi O - the “upper middle class” of sororities. Pretty girls next door who think they’re great
Pi Phi - reputation for the wild party sorority
Gamma Phi - Girls next door, highest GPA on the row
ADPi - down to earth girls
KD - also down to earth
AChiO - the best of the bottom tier
AGD - newest house, started out weird but is slowly rising
Tri Delt - very stigmatized for being the bottom of the bottom tier at UCLA

Don’t know as much about the frats but:

SAE - typical White wealthy frat bros
ZBT - frat bro athletes
Sig Ep - Cool fratty White guys
Sig Chi - OC surfers and skaters
Sig Nu - cool, typically good looking guys
Lambda - solid middle tier
Pi Kap - mixed bag - some cool guys, some a little weird
AEPi - Nice Jewish Boys
Sig Pi - very ethnic and diverse
Beyond that, the rest of the frats are pretty irrelevant as far as my friends and I are concerned

Hope that helped and that I wasn’t too biased!

Does anyone have any idea how much these sororities cost? I just got into UCLA so I’m considering rushing! I would live on campus though, so I’m just wondering if the extra expense is worth it.

@heyucla310 your sorority rankings are very accurate. But your frat rankings are all over the place. Sig nu cool ?? Lmao

@heyucla310 @pleaseacceptme99 im a transfer student from san diego and am interested in rushing as well but what are the chances of a house giving a bid? do they prefer freshman over transfers? I just turned 20 btw

@abaric16 they range in price. But average is around 1,000 dollars per quarter. Also, It’s a little more expensive for new members (there’s an added fee)
