@tracy1017 obviously they prefer freshmen but they do take some 3rd years especially if you’re a transfer because you have a good excuse for not rushing earlier (you weren’t at this school). Still worth a shot
just fyi Alpha Phi was suspended temporarily last year for a black face racial incident. You can look it up it was all over the news. They are allowed to rush this coming fall BUT be aware their terms of probation for the racist incident are heavy and will be extremely restricted. I would not want to pay all that money in dues to be in a limited house.
Greek life is pretty big on campus, mostly because members wear their letters all the time. In general, I would suggest rushing because you never know what you’ll like and you can always drop (although you won’t get your rush fee back – but if money is an issue, Greek life might not be your thing anyways). There’s some dressing up, some philanthropy events, some drinking, some hooking up. You don’t have to partake in all these things, but it’s true that if you don’t drink you’ll be in the minority.
This thread is about sororities, so my quick thing for boys: frats and sororities are very different. Most open parties take place in frat houses (usually on Thursday nights), and all girls are welcome in but guys can only party if they’re in the fraternity. So for guys, it’s like, if you want to party and want instant friends and are into that classic frat scene, you probably should join a frat.
For both genders, main benefits of rushing:
It’s a good way to get to know people
It’s a welcoming community (/ if you’re out of it, you might feel excluded or alone)
They give you events to go to, cool things to do
Main cons:
It’s a superficial system, rush is superficially biased (towards white blondes). Whether or not you benefit from that, you have to accept it, because it’s true
It’s expensive, if that’s an issue for you
Don’t get comfortable and then not join other things on campus, you’ll miss out
Don’t forget about school
Specific sorority rankings are never really true, but my perspective of the stereotypes, top to bottom:
KKG - most exclusive sorority, the typical gorgeous girls
Theta - a bit more variety, exclusive, a top house
DG - the third top house, supposedly nicer than Kappa, parties less
Alpha Phi - used to be a top house, more of that bleached blonde fake tan look though, parties
Chi O - almost a top house, pretty, they consider themselves really chill
Pi Phi - mostly known for partying
Gamma Phi - generally quiet, normal people with a few outliers who really party
ADPi - really nice, sweet
KD - also down to earth, the bottom of the middle class
AChiO - the best of the bottom tier, not that bad, a lot of variety
AGD - newest house, not well known, just kind of weird
Tri Delt - very stigmatized for being the bottom of the bottom tier at UCLA
This is the real ranking

Keep in mind that in addition to those 10 fraternities there are a total of 21 social IFC fraternities. There are also a multitude of professional and cultural fraternities and sororities on campus. Don’t get fixated on rankings, I’m in one of the 10 houses listed above, join the house you fit in best in.
If sorority recruitment is the week before school starts, how do sororities get to know PNMs and how to PNMs get to know sororities? I hear that much of recruitment is already “set” before rush even begins. Is that true?
@Living61 The week before school starts is zero week. Everyone is moved in by then. Most of recruitment is not set. Formal recruitment is during zero week and it is very structured. You should visit the ucla panhellinic website for more information about recruitment.
