UCLA Summer Courses

I am still contemplating if I want to go to the TSP at UCLA or just relax during the summer reading at my own pace. The TSP is a total of 12 units taken in a 6-week span which amounts to about 20 hrs. of lecture and 4 hrs. of tutoring sessions per week. Since all UCLA transfers will start with no gpa but only credits, TSP could be a blessing or a curse for some (at least that’s how I see it.) A person can either succeed during this stressful program or not, it is really up to the individual. I have taken summer school before but only took one course at the community college I now attend. Any suggestions or advice would be most helpful to me. I am still weighing the costs vs. the benefits.

Questions Frequently Asked About FSP

Why should I begin my academic career at UCLA by attending F/TSP?
Your first quarter at UCLA will be extremely demanding. By attending AAP’s Freshman/Transfer Summer Program, you will be several steps ahead of other entering students. You’ll already be familiar with the rigorous demands of university study and will have earned 10-12 units toward your degree. In addition, you’ll have formed important friendships with other students, made valuable contacts with AAP and other university staff, and met a number of UCLA faculty members.

What is the difference between F/TSP and Summer Sessions?
F/TSP is designed to facilitate your transition to the university. So, you will be apart of a small cohort of students who are in the same courses, who are tutored together, and who live together. You must take 2 courses, open only to F/TSP students.

Regular Summer Sessions, on the other hand, is open to all entering and continuing students and to students not regularly enrolled at UCLA. And these students may enroll in any course they want.

Can I take Summer Sessions courses while I attend F/TSP?
No. You cannot concurrently enroll in both sessions.

Can I attend Orientation during F/TSP?
No. All FSP students must attend Orientation session 104 before FSP classes begin. All TSP students must attend Orientation session 206 before TSP classes begin.

Will I receive credit for the classes that I take during F/TSP?
Yes. All classes offered in F/TSP are UCLA courses and meet either university graduation requirements or are prerequisites for required courses.

Can I take only one course without taking the other course it is paired with?
No.

Can I work while I attend FSP?
Yes. However, we don’t recommend it. You’ll need as much time as possible for your studies. In F/TSP, you will be in classes 20 hours a week; you will be in tutorial session 4 hours a week; and you will be reading, writing papers, working in the AAP Computer Lab, and doing library research.

If you are planning to work during F/TSP, you need to talk with an AAP Counselor or Peer Counselor about balancing your schoolwork with your job-related work.

Will I have free time?
Yes. You will have the opportunity to participate in some extracurricular activities at UCLA. However, you will need to manage your time wisely in order to successfully complete your academic work.

If I live in Campus Housing during F/TSP, may I bring my car?
Yes. But you will have little need for a car because the shops, theaters, and restaurants of Westwood are only a few minutes’ walk from the residence hall; and UCLA parking availability is limited. If you do want to bring your car, you must buy a parking permit from the UCLA Parking Office.

If I live in Campus Housing during F/TSP, may I go home on weekends?
Yes. Many students do go home the first weekend of the program, but by the middle of the program, most students stay on campus to study, complete assignments, and use the libraries and computer labs.

Do I automatically get to keep my F/TSP room during the academic year?
No. Housing for the academic year must be arranged with the UCLA Housing Office.

If I commute to F/TSP, is parking arranged for me?
No. You must make your own parking arrangements with the UCLA Parking Office as soon as it is confirmed that you are in F/TSP because parking is extremely limited. Buy your parking permit for structure #4 and #7. The Parking Office also provides information on your options for riding to UCLA in a van pool or a bus. Call the Parking Office at 310-825-9871.
