If I go to community college and join TAP, will this help me in anyway in increasing my chances to get into UCLA? I know that TAP doesn't apply to for engineering majors, but still, would taking honors classes and being certified in TAP still increase my chance for admittance? I was planning to go to this community college that has the TAP program, but seeing as how it doesn't affect engineering majors, I could go to another CC closer to my home.
Additionally, if I want to TAG UCSD while being in TAP for LA, how would that work? I heard that IGETC is required if I want guaranteed admission to San Diego, and that pre-reqs are super important for UCLA (esp. for engineering), but I can't do all of my pre-reqs and IGETC without going over my units needed to transfer. Any help please?!

TAP does indeed increase your chances of gaining admission into UCLA, and significantly at that, but only if your major is in the College of Letters and Science. You already know that engineering majors are not in the College of Letters and Science.

With that being said, TAP will most likely still increase your chances of gaining admission into UCLA as an engineering major, but not as much as it would with majors in the College of Letters and Science. I recommend that you not attend a a community college that is farther away because it has a TAP program.

You can definitely sign a TAG contract/agreement/whatever with UCSD and be in TAP with UCLA. There shouldn’t be any problems arising from doing both of those things. I’m pretty sure that you need to meet IGETC to gain guaranteed admission into UCSD, or meet UC general education requirements by the spring prior to transfer.

You might want to talk to a UCSD and/or UCLA admissions officer or representative about the whole pre-reqs and IGETC thing, as I believe that engineering majors don’t have to do IGETC with those schools, but I could be wrong.

I do know this, however: it’s alright to complete more units than are needed for transfer, as long as you don’t complete like 90 units or something. Again, you may want to talk with a counselor/UCSD or UCLA admissions officer or representative.

I hope that helps.

Thanks for your reply! Well the colleges are only about 5-10 minutes apart from each other, so it’s not a huge difference. But I just wanted to know if TAP would still increase my chances if I applied as an engineering major.

Do you know if I can send an SIR to more than one college? Because I think I feel like I need a little more time to think about this, but don’t want to lose the opportunity to attend the other colleges I got into…

Hmm…I don’t know about that, lol. Sorry, I wish I could help you with that, but I don’t know if you can.

You might want to ask your counselor about that. :D
