Just a few questions, if anyone would please help me out.. Thanks.

1) If you know anything about the newly added Human Biology & Society major, please let me know.

2) My intended major is Sociology and I plan on applying in November. If I get in for Sociology, how hard would it be to switch majors to a non-impacted major? (specifically Human Biology & Society B.A.( I know B.S. is impacted but according to UCLA's site, B.A. isn't)

The reason I ask is because I want to transfer to UCLA next year and by the end of this semester, my Sociology pre-reqs will be done. However, I'm REALLY considering switching to Humn Bio & Soc but I won't have those pre-reqs done until Spring and I understand that may greatly hurt my chances.

Call them and ask. Generally speaking it’s not too hard to switch to a to a non-impacted major. It might different since your is new and located in Bio I believe. Don’t just assume you will be able to; call. Also, understand that if they do let you switch, they might not let you switch back, even after just 1 semester.

You can’t switch into the life sciences department if you weren’t admitted into one of its majors directly. Sociology isn’t in that department so the chances of switching into that major would be pretty unlikely.

I thought that if they were both in the same college (Letters & Sciences), it wouldn’t be that difficult. Plus I hear it isn’t difficult for majors considered unimpacted.

Are you applying as a transfer or a freshman? I am assuming transfer.

I saw the major for Fall 2012 and decided to apply last minute. I had enough pre-reqs for the BA, but not the BS. They let me into the Human Biology and Society BA major. I am planning to go into the medical field and finish my other requirements at UCLA.

I was not really missing requirements for the BA. It’s competitive either way and they admit by major I believe. There were only 7 people let into each BA and BS program as their site says. Both are popular majors. They would like to keep the major relatively small and selective. That may be why premeds were trying to get into either program, but could not.

Also, as long as you have all the requirements done prior to transferring, it should be fine. The past posts are right. If you are admitted to Letters and Science and plan to switch, you can only switch to whatever is in that department.

You should email the adviser. He’s a nice guy and would be happy to respond.

It may be slightly easier to try the B.A. route.

Oh, the UCLA site actually says that you have to contact the department chair in order to switch to another major. I talked with a representative and they said I can switch to anything in the Letters and Science if it’s not impacted.

When I was accepted. Double check though because they just told me I could switch to anything Letters and Science. If anything, email the adviser of Human Biology and Society and tell him your situation.
