UCLA Transfer Question! Changing/Switching Majors After Transfer?

Hello everyone, I am currently at a California community college near San Francisco and am hoping/planning to attend the Fall 2012 semester at a four-year Southern California college after transfer.

I am currently researching CSUs, UCs and private schools in the LA region and came across the UCLA. The college looks great! And would love to attend, if I'm admitted that is!

The major I intend on applying for at UCLA is Communication. I know for a fact that gaining admission as Communication major is extremely competitive, but I'm going for it anyway! By the time I apply later this year for Fall 2012 admission I hope to be done with all communication prerequisites (Mass Media of Communication, Linguistics, Sociology, Psychology, Politics, Statistics, Speech and Economics).

But I'm still having my doubts. I've actually taken 3+ anthropology classes already and have enjoyed them all! So would it be a better idea to apply as an anthropology major for transfer to UCLA instead of a communications major, and then if admitted try to switch/change over?

In broader terms, what are my chances of being able to change majors from anthropology to communications? Would it be that hard even though they're both in the college of letters and sciences? How would I go about doing this?

Any information, suggestions or opinions would be greatly appreciated!

If you can TAP for UCLA then put communications as your first and anthropology as second. That is if you want to major in anthro if you get rejected to communications.

I don’t know which majors are impacted/competitive at UCLA but the chances of switching to an impacted/competitive major at UCLA after transferring is extremely low.

You need a 3.9+ for Communication, and a 3.5 for Anthro… it’s possible to switch majors if you’re GPA is a 3.9+. Remember even UCLA students who entered as freshmen still need to apply to be a Comm major and most get rejected.

I agree with 360atoms.

First, you should join your CCC scholar’s program ASAP and become TAP certified.

Second, finish all the neccesary pre-reqs for both the Anthopology and Comm majors.

Third, apply to UCLA as Comm major and put Anthro as your second choice major. Since you are TAP certified, if you get denied by UCLA’s Comm department they will still consider you as an Anthro major. They do not do this for applicants who are NOT TAP certified.

Lastly, keep up your GPA, try to take part in as many extracirriculars as you can, and enjoy your time in college.
