this website has provided me with tons of information last year when I was applying to the UC's. I got into all of them taht I applied and decided to come to UCLA. I was accepted as a Philosophy major, but decided to switch to History.

Ive received a few PM's about me switching majors, so I thought I would address it for those of you who want to switch into a different major. On your orientation date, they group you by major, and your orientation counselor has a list of majors you could possibly switch into if you want. Dont even try saying communications or biz econ. I didnt go through this process at the time because I was sticking with Philosophy, until I hated the philosophy classes fall quarter. So I met the history counselor, actually in a random situation when Lebron James was on campus (Go lakers), and she convinced me to join history, which has been the best decision. I can go into detail about some of the classses if there are any history majors, or if you guys just want to know the jist of what the classes are like here.

History is a great major for those thinking about law school. The classes really arent very rigorous if you know what professors to choose. I have a 3.85 GPA at UCLA, and I had a 3.75 in CCC.

I could go on about this stuff, but I would rather answer specific questions you guys might have to most help you. Anything from social aspects, the food here, the classes, the dorms, the grading, financial aid, etc.

Congrats to those that got in, your life will never be the same once you are here! It truly is an amazing experience.

Hey Eshuh1, do you know, the provisional admittance that states that you “must maintain your gpa”… is there a little breathing room with that… at least for philosophy?

Could you give more info on the history classes? I’m a history major that just got in but I’m also premed. So basically, I hope at least some classes will be manageable since the science classes can be a bother.

haha i remember stressing about this last year also. I tried to get atleast a B in all of my classes just to be safe, but I would try to maintain above a 3.0 just to be safe. You probably would be fine with a couple C’s but its not worth the risk. Definitely dont get any D’s or F’s because that will almost certainly put your admission into jeopardy

@ Blackmamba8 I want to go to law school, and dont really have a passion for history, so I am just trying to keep my GPA as high as possible. Focus on finding good/easy professors and not worrying so much about what the class is on. Im taking some randommm history courses just because I like the professors. Look out for Ruiz, Wilkie, Weiner, Corey as good professors. Most of my classes have take-home midterm, take-home final. It is extremely manageable to say the least. You honestly dont need to go to class to get an A in some of these classes. expect maybe a 8 Page paper midterm and a 10 Page paper final for most take homes

@naniwa I actually had ZERO pre reqs haha. There are 16 required courses for the entire major. I took 1 in fall, 3 in winter, and im taking 3 right now. I am taking a Hist 1 course at a CCC this summer that satisfies 2 courses here because the CCC is a semester school. Needless to say, it is extremely manageable to take the entire major here at UCLA in your two years regardless if you have any pre reqs completed

@ naniwa no once you are in here, you are just a regular student. You can hypothetically switch into any major. Although some, like communications, require you take 45 graded units to apply to the major. You shouldhave no problem switching to history though.

wait so eshuh, did you keep your gpa exactly the same as you applied or did you dip a bit? Sounds like theres some breathing room, just don’t dip to much?

@ideal my gpa ended up being about the same…but I would just try to keep it above a 3.0 to be safe.

@aninstance I live in a plaza and I find it to be really social. It definitely is not as social as halls, just from the standpoint you dont have to leave your room to go to the bathroom. The rooms are so spacious, and the bathrooms are nice, I wouldnt change being in a plaza if I had to do it all over again. Rieber terrace and rieber vista are def the best buildings. My floor is really social, I know just about everyone on the floor and I didnt try extremely hard to do so. There is a good mix of transfers, freshman, and continuing mix of students in this building and I like it like that. The age range on my floor is anywhere from 18-25, so there is someone for anyone and everyone

Could you comment on the reading-load for History majors? Also, what are some good ways to establish connections with profs for LoR for law schools (besides the obvious doing research and going to office hours).

^i’d like to know that too.
in addition, how difficult do you reckon it is to get a single in one of the plazas?
also, thanks for making this thread :D

As a newly admitted transfer student and one who is interested in the subject can you give me the names of some of the better professors as well as some of the more easier ones ( the reason why I want to know about some of the more easier ones is because I would like to take them for my first quarter so I can adjust to living on my own and the quarter system etc). Also do you think if I participate in rush activities I would be able to manage and balance going out with studying/completing assignments? Or is the reading and workload very time consuming?

Awesome! Thanks for all the advice Eshug! You’ve really eased my mind on the whole switching majors thing.

So the orientation counselor has a list of majors you can switch into, and History was on that list? SWEET. I was considering not attending UCLA if accepted with my alternate if I was unable to switch into History, but now that the possibility of switching is there…go Bruins!

@Eshug1: So when the provisional contract says to “maintain your gpa” you’re saying that as long as I get above a 3.0 i’m fine right? Because I got admitted with a 3.68 and I’m scared I might get a B in two of my classes which will put me around a 3.5ish. Would that still be fine or would I get revoked because that would be below the gpa i was admitted for? I know you answered this in the first page but I wanted to be more specific and get a more indefinate answer haha. Thanks (:

@levonid it is pretty simple to switch! only for non impacted majors though. My counselor switched me in probably about 3 minutes lol

AAW000- I am not positive about econ, but I would say that because econ is impacted that it would be a longshot, if not impossible.

@jaynami All the “maintain your gpa” is pretty ambiguous. I was like if I have a 4.0 but im only taking one class and get a B, thats a significant drop in my average. But just get atleast a B in all your classes and I am certain you should be fine. But if you are going to apply to grad school your CCC transcripts will likely need to be included so just go for straight A’s! If you need some inspiration, google some rescinded stories

@Eshug: Wellll isn’t History considered “impacted” at UCLA? Not as impacted as Communication, Bis Econ, and Political Science of course. But yeah, lol. Well, so long as I can switch, all’s well that ends well!
