I think you have a great shot at both schools, dont doubt yourself, with TAP at ucla you have a fantastic chance. But I wouldnt settle for your major, do what you love.

with history you can always become a teacher or historian. ;)

yeah, don't major in something you don't want to do just because you want to go to the school. its totally not worth it. I could've gotten into ucla or ucb as a sociology major but i really want to do business so id idn't apply. My friend with the same gpa as me got into both as a soc major but he's regretting his decision since he can't change his major and he doesnt know what he's going to do when he graduates.

dont settle for a major that will get you into ucb, ucla...do what you want, dont make a superficial insecure decision and let the top UC prestige fool you into doing something you aren't passionate about.

on another note, the top UC's (UCB, UCLA, SD) are good schools but they aren't like Ivy's, in that you can't major in something random and get a top job (ibank, consulting).

I'm a philosophy major. If I was at Harvard, I'll be a philosophy major. If I was at my local CC, I'll still be a philosophy major. If Harvard let me in on the condition that I'm a sociology major, f-them, I'll stick with my philosophy.

Follow what you really want to study. A history degree from UCLA and UC-Berkeley is meaningless if it kills your dream.

UCSB - business-econ will take you for sure
UCR - but you don't want to go there
UCB - econ (will still be a reach but not impossible like Haas)
UCLA - biz-econ (high reach as well)
USC - econ (reach) Marshall (High reach)
UCSD - econ/management science (match)

tonyage - i dont know much about engineering... all i know is that its not as impacted as business so you'd have a better chance to get in as an engineering major than a business major.

in my opinion, i have seen that business/econ majors can lead to a variety of job fields. whether you want to go into international trade and diplomacy (you would want a good background in history for that) or managing your own small business, a biz/econ degree can lead to alot of different opportunities for you. i have chosen this degree as a kind of procrastination aid.. as far as deciding on a career, which i'll just do later when i finally graduate. :)
