I'm in limbo between these three schools. I'm afraid ucla is overly competitive and just too much to handle, ucsd on the other hand is known for being socially dead, and ucsb party reputation is a little intimidating. Any insight?

I figure with a history degree, you basically have two paths: grad school or law school. I’m not discounting that there are other professions and other directions you can take, but I assume most people do this with the intention of becoming a teacher/professor or lawyer. UCLA is competitive with a high reputation, and that intimidates me. But personally, I do believe that it matters where you go when you apply to postgraduate schools. A good GPA from UCLA looks better than UCSD or UCSB. I think it’ll be easier to make something out of our degrees if we choose UCLA.

But that’s only if you feel you can keep up that GPA.

Well, to be honest, none of these schools is likely to be very different from one another in regards to the rigor of their history programs. Furthermore, academically, transfers do just fine upon transferring for the most part. Are you doubting yourself? In all likelihood, you’ll do just fine after transferring.

How much do you care about social life? UCSB seems too social for you and UCSD seems not to be social enough. If this is the case, I recommend going to UCLA. People often remark about its nice balance between academics and social life.

Of course, I am biased towards UCLA. I’ll let you know that upfront. ;)

@Cayton what the hell the last time I checked your post count it was 910. HOw did it get to 1,091

I’ve been answering dozens of questions a day for the past week or so.

What kind of History are you interested in? Because that matters each school has certain types of History programs that are better than others in terms of Western Civ, World History, History of Religion etc. Depending on what kind of History you want to focus on can and should play a big role in selecting a school. For example I want to focus on Western Civ UCLA&UCSD are good for this while UCSB is the place to be for History of Religion.(from what professors have told me).

When in doubt go to berkeley.

@sonic23
I’m interested in world history and I know ucla has a good program. However, I don’t think i’m ucla material. I just got lucky. Which school are you most likely to attend?

@cochoa14

Don’t doubt yourself. If you weren’t UCLA material, you probably wouldn’t have been admitted to UCLA. You’ll do just fine if/when you go to UCLA in the fall as long as you study hard.

@cochoa14 , I feel the same way…I did a thread about inferiority complex, so check it out! Just visit and see and make a pro and con list and look at all the courses you would have to take a both schools and decide from tht!

Woah woah woah. Are you effing kidding me?! You got into UCLA, and you’re saying you aren’t good enough?! That is bs. You got in. Why? Because you are UCLA material. Every year thousands of people wish they could go to UCLA because it’s one of the best schools in the country. People from around the world would do anything to go to that school. And YOU got in. You owe it to yourself and your family to take this opportunity. I’m not saying don’t consider the other schools, because those are good schools too. But don’t back out of the chance of a lifetime because you’re scared. You will regret that forever. Always bet on yourself. Good luck.

You will do fine, don’t you worry. You will have plenty of people to study with and you will do fine. I too got in as a Pre-History major at UCLA. You will do just fine! UCLA is an awesome school, don’t pass up the chance. You should be proud of yourself, you have come this far, you are almost there! Best of luck!

Thanks for all the encouragement, all of you guys are awesome! For all of you history majors which school are you leaning toward most?

Come to UCLA and we’ll start networking

My data points are dated, but when I went to UCSB it wasn’t intimidating, it was wonderful, and when I transferred to UCLA for non school reasons, I got better grades than at UCSB. That is because at UCSB I had been intending to write the Great American Novel, while when I transferred to UCLA I had decided to go to law school and needed the As. It was my own goal setting, not the classes, that made the difference. At that time UCLA was more of a commuter school, so I didn’t like it as much, but I understand that has changed a lot with so many dorms on campus.

However, I note that Harvard Law’s latest list of ‘where Harvard Law students went to undergrad’ has both UCLA and UCSB in it. (My own brother went from UCSB to Harvard Law, in fact.)

But I think UCLA may be a little higher ranked in history, I seem to have read somewhere. I don’t know why, if that is true, so you should find out how their history programs suit what you want to do. UCLA is better known. Random people in grocery store lines will look impressed when you reply that that is where you went (if they ask). I wouldn’t have given up my first two years at UCSB for anything, though.

Go to UCLA, you will love it. When it is all said and done, you will be very happy you picked UCLA over your other options.

@cochoa14 go to UCLA and dont worry im intimidated as well but i figure if we got in than we must being doing something right. Study hard, work hard and be proud of it

Im going to UCLA and plan on just studying all day every day lol

Any of you history guys going to UCLA looking for roommates? Solidarity in history.

@Tik1127 if you don’t mind me asking what are your stats? I feel more convinced every time I read ur post lol!

@onehandedred where do plan to live dorms or university apartments?
