UCLA undergrad to UCLA GRAD SCHOOL- How hard??

I've heard that most schools (top tier UC's for example) don't yield a high admittance rate of grad students into their school, especially if the student went there as an Undergrad...how valid is this??... i was planning on going to UCLA for undergrad pre-med, but have realized that my chances might slim down if I tried to get into UCLA's MED school...I would appreciate any comments

its a myth that UCLA doesnt accept its own undergrads…but u have it right for the most part…UCs dont have that high an admittance rate because they deflate everyone’s GPAs…UCLA is extremely competitive for premed especially, as is UC Berkeley…ur chances of getting into a good med school are best served by going to UCSD, where u will have a higher GPA with a little less effort and a little more time to do ECs than u would at Cal or UCLA…so go to UCSD if ure worried about grad school:

pre-law-- Come to UCLA…cause english, hist, etc are considered easy

premed/predent/prehealth - go to UCSD

pre biz - UC Berkeley

Don’t worry about it, honestly. The ratio of people who think they’ll become a doctor and the ones who actually end up doctors is pretty low. Your chances of getting into grad school also decreases going to competitive universities like UCLA. You probably won’t have to worry about being readmitted into UCLA for grad school and, even if you do, there are many other UCs to choose from. I wouldn’t put too much thought into a detail that most likely won’t affect you.

EDIT: I disagree with mnop444 that UCSD is a good alternative to UCLA for pre-med. Both are bad choices. Your GPA is not likely to raise significantly enough going to UCSD and their Biological Science programs are actually higher ranked than the one at UCLA. If you want to go to med school, I strongly advise a university UCI or under.

@ mnop444 -I was thinking of going to Pomona College first as undergrad pre-med, than hopefully transferring to UCLA for med school…but you think UCSD is better for Pre-med?? I was only mulling between UCLA or Pomona for Pre-med.

^ya thats even better to go to Irvine…u guys really shouldnt worry about prestige for grad schools…there are kids who come from UCDavis, UCI, UCSB and get accepted to Ivy league medical schools

no dont waste money on a private school (if they gave u a scholarship then go to a private school hands down cause they will inflate ur gpa)…either go to UCSD or below

haha, yes, actually I am getting a very decent scholarship for Pomona college…so Pomona college over pretty much any UC for pre-med?? if money is not an issue? I just thought UCLA would help set me up better for med-school with all its medical resources/networking ability

lol UCLA doesnt offer anything SPECTACULAR…ppl always act like the opportunities here are soo great…but they aren’t that great…u getting into med school will depend solely on u and ur efforts…UCLA doesn’t have a ‘network’ ability and they dont really give that many medical resources to undergrads…most of my friends who work at the ucla health places…are just secretaries pretty much lol…yes Pomona will take care of u much better, and ur grades wont take that big of a hit as they will here at UCLA…why risk a bad GPA…no school will set you up better for med-school than another school based off of resources…it will set you up better for med school than another school by offering u an easier, higher GPA (which is Pomona)

@mnop444
Those "secretary"positions are the best any premed student can hope for and are highly sought after. They’re also what grad schools expect.

Pomona might boost your GPA. I say might because Pomona students are even more competitive than UCLA ones and its unclear whether any inflation will help. The advantages to going to Pomona are a better education and more opportunities to get to know your professors who will write you rec letters. Pomona is certainly a better value than UCLA but I wouldn’t call it a better direct route to med school.

lol my older sibling got into the number two med school in the country and they didn’t do ANY of those secretarial positions AT ALL…u dont get into top schools in the country by doing stuff everyone else does…you have to show ur a leader and jump off the paper

The other sought after positions are research assistants for professors. They don’t do that much research at LACs.

haha don’t believe this mnopp guy. UCLA has extensive “pre-med” resources… from research to clinical experience (we have one of the best medical hospitals, DUH)

also, i totally agree w/ sentiment on this

Well Pomona is very selective and therefore draws competitive individuals, but i also heard that UCLA is Very cut-throat, and i was thinking…being in a quarter system for pre-med wouldn’t be as ideal as being in a semester system like Pomona which would give you a better chance to imbibe and understand all the rigorous pre-med courses…feel free to critique

I’m done with chemistry and most of LS, and physics and not once have i EVER felt that it was bloody “cut throat”. Sure, there is competition, but that’s in EVERY SCIENCE MAJOR ACROSS THE UNIVERSE (save easy as hell colleges)… What do you expect? A pat on the shoulder and crayon coloring? Sorry to break it to you, but you’re in COLLEGE now… if you find UCLA premed extremely difficult, what’re you going to do in med school? Sorry to sound harsh, but in all honestly, UCLA isn’t that bad in pre-med stuff. Just study and you’ll be fine.

thank you for your input waterpologuy4lfe, and i Know that UCLA is a good pre-med, however, are you saying that UCLA would be better than Pomona college for pre-med?? …what is your background in terms of schools and major?

In all honesty, I have no idea… You should definitely ask a pomona student whose pre-med or go on the pomona college boards?

I’d say that don’t choose a school on which has a better premed program, go with the school that you like/enjoy OVERALLL–the school you like little better, in terms of everything. for all you know, premed might not be your thing in 1 year or 2… so don’t base it on that…

well I know that UCLA has an excellent MED school, however, undergrad and grad educations are very different…I’ve visited both schools and i could see myself at either school…im just trying to figure which would give me a stronger bet for med-school.

There’s a program where you can get an M.A. in econ if you have a 3.6 in a number of classes including Real Analysis and upper-division Linear Algebra.

Every department offers a program like that.

these last two messages just seem futile to my concerns/situation
