Hi! I want to go into either Nursing or Cognitive Science (to be a private practice psychologist). What do I to need to get into UCLA’s nursing school? What do I need to get into UF’s nursing school? Also, if I went the cognitive science route, are my changes of getting into UCLA’s College of Letters and Science easier? Lastly, what do I need to get into USC’s Dornsife College of Letters, Arts, and Sciences? Thanks!
Instate for California?
No, I live in Cincinnati, Ohio @“aunt bea”
Your OOS fees at all of these schools really need to be considered given that you hope to go into graduate work.
The UC’s are very competitive and very expensive for OOS students. If your parents are going to pay $55K per year to attend, that seems really unnecessary to increase your overall costs when you consider your future post graduate fees. UC’s will not provide financial aid to OOS students. I’m assuming Florida schools have similar policies.
USC is running around $70K per year. As an undergrad, that will run into a lot of money for a BS degree and later post-graduate work.
@“aunt bea” My family and I understand the amount of OOS fees for undergrad and grad school. Do you know how I could get into UF, UCLA, or USC (southern California)?
Ask your parents about what amount would make sense to them (that they can pay out of pocket, without parental loans) and run the NPCs together.
In my opinion it makes no sense to pay that much money to attend a large state university OOS at private school costs.
USC, yes, it makes sense. CSU-Chico, Long Beach, SDSU, San Marcos, Sonoma? Yes, perhaps.
UC-Sf and UCLA, no, it doesn’t.
Most Nursing Programs are very hard to get into though, and may not be the best path to private practice psychologist. However, it’s true that as a nurse you’d have some hours and experience you could use to enter a clinical psych program.
As to how you could get there, it’ll depend on several factors, for which we need more info:
What year are you? What are your stats (GPA, both w and uw + test scores + advanced classes taken/planned?)
UCLA Nursing is extremely competitive with acceptance rate of < 4%. It is a crapshoot!
For the UC’s
Meet the A-G requirements. Make sure you have a year of performing or fine arts credit in a class.
Have a strong GPA (4.0 unweighted)
Have strong test scores, as close to 1600 as possible.
Hope that you are lucky.
Pay in cash $55-$58K per year up front.
Lety your parents know that if you were to graduate with a Ph.D, and go into private practice, it will take years (decades) to recoup any costs.
For USC, be a national merit winner and the above.
Without knowing anything about your profile all one could say is apply.
Compare your stats to the Freshman profile for UCLA/USC. If you at or above the averages, then you stand a chance at an acceptance. Remember stats are only part of the application, so make sure you have some solid essays and show passion in your EC’s.
