UCLA v. NYU another comparison thread.=_=;;

So now that all the decisions have been released, I need to choose between UCLA and NYU. It’s always been my dream to live in NYC, but since I’m from Southern Cali my parents want me to stay close to home and go to UCLA. Plus UCLA is a lot cheapter. In terms of overall prestige, I’ve heard that UCLA is more selective and well-known. What do you guys think? Is there anyone here who is an alumni from either school and give me some insight? Thanks :slight_smile:

What's your major?

If you go to NYU, are you going to need a lot of loans, etc?

My major is Bio-engineering, and I won't need loans to go to NYU although it's going to take a lot of coaxing to get my parents to pay for it ;;; since my brother and my sister went to MIT and Yale my parents really want me to go to a public school.

Also, NYU's campus is kinda spread apart and stuff. UCLA's campus is very cohesive, and UCLA has more school spirit.

haha that sucks. jipped because you're the youngest kid?

also, have you considered ucsd? ucsd's bioengineering is among the best in the nation.

my best friend is in the same predicament...her mom wants her to stay closer to home at ucla. her dream is going to nyu to major in int'l relations. we're all encouraging her to go for nyu. it's her dream school and best for her major. they're not offering her a huge amount of money, but loans are a small exchange for experiencing your dream.

they say both are in a big city but in reality, only NYU is really in the city, LA is in a pocket suburban westwood. i had a friend who chose NYU for business, hated the school's environment, transferred to a community college, then had to do the app process all over again and be a community college transfer to UCLA. UCLA also does have a more "traditional" college feel-- cohesive campus, school spirit, etc. so in term of environment, make sure you find the one that fits you more, for you dont want to end up like my friend.

if your dream is to live in NYC though, NYU will suit you a lot better. MUCH easier to land and manage internships and job offers in NYC if youre coming from NYU. thats not to say that the same cant be done via UCLA though.

NYU isn't for everyone. Be sure that you are in love with it.

I have to choose between UCLA and Calpoly for Engineering?
Which one is better? Please tell me?
I am sorry for spoiling this thread. But I really need to know.

freebird: UCLA, period.

make another thread though...

Yeah I got into UCSD as well, but the thing is, I'm from SD and to be honest I really want to get away..... If you know what I mean!
Thanks everyone for helping me out... I think I made my choice now from what most people have been telling me. I think UCLA might suite me better, and I will always have a another chance to live in NYC later, right? :)
