UCLA Versus Cal Poly for Mechanical Engineering

I’m stuck in deciding between these two schools for mechanical engineering. I got into both. I visited Cal Poly and I really like how cal poly is hands-on. However, I do not like the rural feel and the small city. I love UCLA’s campus and its surroundings. However, I’ve heard that UCLA is more theoretical and researched based for engineering. I want to pursue a job in the defense industry and work for a company like Lockheed Martin. I much rather do hands-on work than research also. What are your thoughts about the two programs? Does UCLA have sufficient hands-on programs? Is there information I’m missing that would help me decide?

Thanks!

The companies you mentioned want someone who is strong on theory and concepts as well. They are not hiring a “mechanic”…they are hiring an engineer! Having said that, I agree that Cal Poly is a viable choice, as it is stong in all aspects!

I’m sure Cal Poly also teaches concepts very well.
