Ucla vs. Berkeley (civil engineering)?

i got admission in Berkeley too ! on 25 april unbelievable huh? with full aid !

congratulations!!
does your aid include TA/RAship??

thanks moommoombaba!

tha aid is RA…i m gonna work with a professor in some project n thats where i ll get the money from…but since this will steal some of my time , i ll need 1.5 years for the MSc, instead of 1 …but the aid is for 1.5 years too so its fine

so let me guess it’s like ~20 hours a week of RA and it covers all your fee?.. that’s nice. did you have any prior research experience??
you want to go for phd later?

civeng congratulations!

@gokcenk thanks n congrats too!.. cya in the bay area!

@moommoombaba yea i had applied for phd…the aid is for the masters and then hopefully i can find some other project …

Folks, I’m gonna be applying to top MS structural engineering programs this October, I just gave my GRE and got Q740 V550, do you guys mind telling me what you had on your GRE in order to get accepted?

One observation that i’ve come across on these boards is that if you go to a top 30 engineering program or top 5, your job prospects aren’t going to change that much. I went to Georgia Tech with a scholarship and lucked out because it covered all my tuition. Now that i’m actually done with school and have a good job I look back and think “man am I glad I don’t have any student debt.” If going to UCLA vs Berkley means you don’t have to borrow money, or significantly less, I would go to UCLA. Granted you won’t have the joy of telling people that you study engineering at Berkley, but when you get that first job the difference in debt accrued vs actually salary is going to alarm you. You won’t make up the difference in salary in any significant way (all things being relative) by going to a higher ranking school.

riceman,

your verbal is fine, but you might want a higher Q. average for Cal is around 770~ note that it’s the average that means A LOT of admitted students have pretty much 800 on Q. you should aim for as close to 800 as possible for you to stay competitive

Riceman–

Coming from Rice, I had a 5XX (can’t remember) verbal and an 800 quant and got into Berkeley etc. The 800 quant isn’t horrendously tough to get, you just have to be very diligent about accuracy.

Aibarr and moommoombaba, thanks for the advice, I gave GRE another shot and got Q790 and V420 =( I hope schools look at my highest scores.
congratulations to everyone on this forum that got accepted into top programs, I’m very envious, you’re experiences are invaluable for me to read! may you be successful with all your academic endeavors!

fellows, I’m coming to Stanford. this thread has been alot of help in making my decision! thanks all

'Grats!! Good luck in the future!

Riceman welcome to Stanford SEG!

even tho i am graduating this year but i might see you around next year when i come visit my classmates
