UCLA vs BU

Hi everyone!
Again, its not such a good question to ask, but which school do you think is better, from your personal point of view???
Also, if you can, could you help me answer this question. I see myself on stage first rather than on screen after I graduate, and transitioning to film/theater if I get the opportunity. I know BU is an AWESOME place to start my career in theater, however how good would UCLA be? Are internships to NYC common at UCLA? (I got into Fordham and Emerson also, but I feel as though BU has a stronger program and although Fordham IS in NYC, Bostons only a 4hr drive from NYC so...)
By the way I'm an international student so I am very limited in my knowledge of these colleges. So forgive me if my questions are hard to answer :(

All are very good programs. My D is a freshman at Emerson an she is in theater but has already been in 2 short films. She really loves Emerson. If possible try to visit a couple of the schools you are really interested in. I know it could be difficult but that is the only way you will be able to judge the schools. Good luck!

All four of these programs are outstanding and any one of them can be an awesome place to start your career in theatre. The STRONGEST program, however, is the one that will be the best fit for you. Unfortunately for you given that you live in New Zealand, unless you visit them, you are really only guessing as to which program that will be and I gather this will be based on what you have read and other people’s opinions. If you visit you can at least take an educated guess based on your own opinion which is really all that matters in the end.

It does sound to me though, that you have already made your decision to attend BU so don’t try to second guess it. Trust your gut, move on and do your best in Boston. Good luck! :)

You should PM the poster “chrissyblu” if she doesn’t chime in. Her D goes to UCLA and she knows a lot about the program. She often mentions the wonderful film opportunities.

I don’t want to open a can of worms here, but I do want to remark that you can’t go to BU thinking you “practically” are in NYC. Boston is a terrific city with wonderful opportunities, and you can get as much out of BU as anywhere (a fantastic school and program). But if you want NYC or LA, don’t go to school in Boston. A 4-hour trip is not something you’re going to do anytime too often, and you won’t find the people there are focused as much on the NYC world as on their own vibrant theatre community.

Keep asking questions, but make sure you ask them of the schools themselves. They will be happy to talk about what you will do there in detail, especially as you are international and can’t visit easily. They will also get you in touch with students who can help you more than our small group here.

The BFA at BU is an acting conservatory with a classical emphasis somewhat similar to what you would get at the British drama schools or at NIDA in Australia. It has huge numbers of contact hours in training and very little general education. I would have auditioned there were it not for the price tag. The rest are more liberal arts oriented and you would most likely still need more training on the graduate level if you want to be prepared to play Shakespeare, Chekhov, Ibsen etc. at the prestigious American theater companies. I would say UCLA if you were mostly into tv and film acting.
