I’m really conflicted right now between Berkeley and UCLA. I recently visited both campuses and to be honest I can’t decide because I liked both their vibes. For pre med, it seems like a lot of people across different forums said that UCLA is better because you can get a higher GPA and better opportunities at the hospital on campus, but when you look at the med school acceptance rates, it looks like it’s about 50%-55% for both schools. I mean, it’s practically the same. Can anyone explain this? Is there really an advantage in coming to UCLA or does it actually not matter at all?
I wouldn’t rely too much on Cal’s statistics. Not all premed students report them (supposedly, someone correct me if I’m wrong). UCLA is clearly the better choice in terms of premed opportunities (closer hospital, more volunteer opportunities) and grade-wise (grade deflation isn’t as bad).
I’m facing the same decision right now, and am slightly leaning towards UCLA because its grade deflation isn’t as bad and its campus and westwood is nicer, however, Cal has higher prestige, so I’m still not sure
The prestige between Cal and UCLA is very, very small – and in the workforce it’s unlikely that having gone to Cal vs. UCLA will give you any leverage. Furthermore, the tiny edge that Cal might have certainly will not outweigh the negative effects of a lower gpa or less experience.
