I need to decide between UCLA and Cal. I've been asking around and basically what I've been getting is that the people are generally happier and Cal and I'll meet some cools ones there while UCLA has a great pre-med program and opportunities but is extremely competitive. My parents want me to go to UCLA, obviously, since I live in LA. UCLA would be the easier choice since everything's convinient and connections are made but Cal would allow me to start over and be completely independent. Starting over seems kinda rough for a pre med student but I dont know how hard it'll be. Also I've heard GPAs are higher at Berkeley which is important for med school.
I DONT KNOW.
Any advice?

Thanks!!!!!!!!

Go where you will be happiest

Both schools are equally competitive. I’m a big fan of getting away to college if you can; living somewhere else is part of growing and the collegiate experience. But if you hate the Berkeley vibe, and love Westwood, the choice is easy.

People are definitely happier at UCLA. I am from the area, so going home whenever i choose is nice. The area is a lot nicer as well. Both are very competitive for pre-meds.

That’s what makes for a great commuter school. Just think if thousands of kids went home every weekend!

(You and I have a different view of what it means to ‘go away’ to college, and in UCLA’s case, its only a 10 week quarter.)

I chose UCLA, thanks! It’'s advantageous to go home and relax, esp. if I’m going to be pre-med.
How’s the quarter system tho? Is it true that you can take many classes? Are there a lot of classes that are only 1 quarter?
And how does “one college year of Physics” work out? Is that three different classes or just one classes yearlong?
Thanks!!!

For an example of the differences between semesters and quarters, think of Frosh Chem. One year long; ~30+ weeks. Three finals (quarter) or two (semester). Three midterms (quarter); perhaps 5/6 semester. Quizzes are allotted. Lab time is the same. The curriculum is the same.
