Since I’m naturally inclined to hate Cal, I think becoming a Bruin would be a better bet.

Go to Berkeley for your major.

If you have ulterior motives, such as you want to be close to home, then go to UCLA.

Go to Berkeley if you want to be sad.

Berkeley for sure

im in the same boat how about for a biology (pre-med) major?
i live 25 min from la if that means anything

ucla has more pre-med opportunities (own hospital + cedars-sinai right there + easy to get research), but berkeley has a slightly higher % accepted to med school. your choice.

as of now I am leaning more to UCLA but after I graduate which school would hold more weight when applying to Med School

Berkeley engineering >>LA engineering

theyre pretty equal when it comes to “looking good.” what really matters is difficulty of your college, and ucla/cal are both top tier in that category. but then again, its worth it to go to a worse school and get a better gpa. if you still mess up…well then youre screwed.

bladetrack…i would just go to ucla…be prepared for lots of competit and be prepared to work hard, ill tell u this right now…pick up an apchem book over the summer and READ IT…the fresh chem prof at UCLA thinks that all of his kids have taken AP Chem…

^ That’s not an unrealistic expectation at Berkeley. Does that speak to the different standards at UCLA and Berkeley? I sure hope not.

If you’re planning to go to Med school, definitely go to UCLA.

But the OP was asking about Engineering… and Berkeley’s program is kind of nationally renowned.

lol if ure going to med school DEFINITELY DO NOT COME TO UCLA…GO TO UCSD…UCLA OFFERS NOTHING THAT GREAT FOR PREMED EXCEPT COMPETITION AND USING THEIR UNDERGRADS TO CLEAN TEST TUBES AND CALL IT ‘RESEARCH’

Well, if that’s the case the only reason to go to UCLA is linguistics.

That is beyond wrong. UCLA has the largest premed population of the UCs (and possibly the largest premed population of all the colleges in the US, I don’t remember if the data says that or not).

A premed will face much more savage competition at UCLA than at Cal for the simple fact that they will be dealing with a ton more premeds at UCLA than at Cal.

For the poster who wants to major in engineering, Berkeley is much higher ranked.

For the poster who is pre-med, Berkely is just as prestigious (and probably more so) than UCLA.

Someone correct me if this has changed, but it used to be that the UC grad schools preferred students who DIDN’T attend that school as an undergrad. I hope someone with more recent experience of this speaks up.

But, for med school, even if going to UCLA undergrad doesn’t hurt your chances of acceptance into UCLA Med School, going to a school like Berkeley shouldn’t hurt.

Plus, for a student who is academically-minded, I think Berkeley offers a much better “undergraduate experience.” It’s a unique place and if you have a chance to go there, I’d go for it. I went to UCLA for grad school (after Berkeley for undergrad), and, although I loved the weather, UCLA just didn’t have the unique student experience that Berkeley offers.

Go to whichever campus you enjoy the most. In the end, your experience will matter a lot more than the departments, the names, etc.

Academic incest is frowned upon, but it’s definitely not impossible to get into the same school for grad as for undergrad. It’s just discouraged because who the hell wants to spend another 5 years with the same people with whom you did undergrad?

Contrary to popular belief, caps lock is not cruise control for cool.

You’re close, but based on my experience marrying a med student who attended UCLA, my equally-half-assed-sort-of-educated opinion is that competition at both will be pretty much equal. I somehow find it hard to believe that it’s harder to get an A in the pre-med reqs at UCLA than at Cal, simply owing to the fact that both have very ambitious, intelligent student bodies. Population curves simply don’t work that way.

Go to whichever one you like more. It’s that simple.

Silly. UCLA also has excellent social science departments if you enjoy that. Also, unless your one of the CC.com “Top 10 or nothing” types, UCLA has strong offerings in pretty much everything. To be honest, nobody outside of academia really cares about academia. Your job/grad school interviews will not center around the USNews rankings of your department.

Go where you’ll be happy. It’s really that simple.

UCLA trumps Cal in terms of how it spoils its students. just look at our dorm food. INFINITELY better LMAO.
