Hey everyone, so far i got accepted into UCLA/FORDHAM BA Theatre and EMERSON BFA Acting. I'm an international student so my source of information about these schools are very limited. I know its hard to compare the three schools, but in YOUR point of view which school do you think provides the "best" education in acting? Or if you could atleast outline the advantages and disadvantages of each school, that would help a lot too! Sorry for asking such a naive question. BUT IM DESPERATE!

i dont know about acting… but for most majors UCLA is the best out of them… and much more prestigious than the others.

Well first, Congratulations! : ) Right now I’m waiting for a decision for both Emerson and UCLA myself. Hey maybe I’ll be seeing you around…lol. But anyways, I applied for the film dept and to be honest, with this field (including yours) UCLA is the way to go. I checked out the professors in the film dept and they are still working in the industry and they are incredibly knowledgeable. So I’m assuming for theatre it would be the same way. Also internships is what you need most. I know Emerson has an internship program in both in L.A. and London. Which is great, but if you are already in L.A. you wouldn’t have to worry about knowing where to go, b/c you’re there. Good luck and let me know how it goes. Hopefully we’ll get the chance to meet. : ) I’m dying here just waiting for a phone call or an email or whatever it is they decide to do. lol

Does it matter to you if you attend a large school or a small school?
My daughter will be attending Emerson (not theatre) and it was her top
choice over comparable schools as she liked the small size and urban campus.

If you prefer a large traditional campus, that would be UCLA.

Hey thanks for the info! Hopefully, if fate lets us, we will meet in the future! Also, good luck for your results!
My only concern for UCLA is that, at the information session (on the audition day) the director of theatre said that theatre in UCLA is heavily based on theory where you are required to constantly write essays. From what you have heard is this true? and if so, would there be a lot of practical work as well?
In addition, although I thoroughly enjoyed my experience in Boston and Emerson, I have never been to UCLA, so I don’t want to finalize my judgement just by experience. Although I like the fact that Emerson provides at BFA in acting, I’m also considering the location, reputation, image of the school in terms of acting. I know UCLA is a well known/recognised school, how well known and popular is Emerson for acting in America?

Size doesn’t really matter to me. But I have to admit I did like Emerson’s campus.

jaefat,

You should take this question to the Theater/Drama Majors sub-forum in the College Majors Forum. The people who post in that forum should have good ideas for you. Here is a link: [Theater/Drama Majors - College Confidential](Theater/Drama Majors - College Confidential Forums)

One more consideration for you is the location. Emerson is clear across the continent from UCLA, and while there are direct flights from Los Angeles to some cities in New Zealand, everything from Boston will require at least a stop, if not a change.

UCLA. Unless you are sure you prefer the stage to the screen and you are sure that you want to be in New York, then you could be really happy at Fordham at the Lincoln Center Campus.

Thank you! : ) Well to be honest I never really have heard of Emerson until I spoke to a person from Boston University. But I completely understand what you are saying. I have not visited either school, I live in NJ. I mean if you are only writing essays all the time and no time for performance then, that really would suck. I mean I would want to be up there acting all the time.
Emerson does have an L.A. internship, so if you decided you would rather go to Emerson, you’ll still have that opportunity to get out there. I mean its a really tough decision. UCLA, I’ve always thought, would be the best school to get your name out there. Especially since acting and film is all about who you know. Could you call and ask someone in the theatre department about the curriculum?
Emerson may allow more time for acting for you since it isn’t as big. But like you said, you are looking at reputation.
This truly is a tough decision, I’ll be honest, If I get accepted to both colleges I will probably pick UCLA. But this is because I have been working my butt off for the past year just so I could apply. But let me know what you decide. Oh and how was Emerson? lol. I’ve heard it is in a great location. But definitely let me know what you decide. I’m hoping I have the same difficult decision. lol

Thank you for the link! I just posted the same question up there.
Flight issues are not that much of a problem for me as long as I go to a school with a strong education in acting.

To be honest, I want to start off with theatre and then move onto film/theatre.

Hey thank you so much for the information. I guess a lot depends on whether I want to start with film in LA or theatre in NYC or Boston. But again, its still a difficult decision.
Emerson is a great school! Its in the heart of Boston so there is lots of excitement and theatre-life there is just amazing! The atmosphere, everything! (well not as amazing as NYC but still pretty awesome). Well hope you hear good news soon! let me know how things turn out!
