Hello! I was recently accepted to the UCLA Musical Theater Major, as well as UCI, and Cal State Fullerton. I have essentially taken UCI out of the running (although who knows i guess) and now am trying to decide between the UCLA and CSUF programs. Both of them are amazing, but they are extremely different. Can someone (hopefully from within one of the programs) give me some comparison! Thank you!

If you search for “UCLA” in the CSUF threads, people have highlighted the differences and similarities in the programs. Major difference: CSUF offers a BFA in Musical Theatre, UCLA offers a BA in Theatre with specialty/emphasis in Musical Theatre (Ray Bolger program). A BFA is a more unit-intensive degree, and one that is typically more intensely focused on professional actor training.

One is cut and one is no cut. Do your research.

I already know all of these things, I was more hoping for some insight from actual students on the feeling of each program, and how their personal experience was.

My perception is that UCLA is more academic, while CSUF is more vocational. That’s the philosophy of the the two systems in general, but you probably know that. I would go to UCLA in a heartbeat. Probably UCI over Fullerton, too.

Actually, CSU GE requirements are one of the strongest in the nation. I’ve taught at two Research I institutes, and both required less in the way of GE, theatre history, etc. CSU is a very intense program academically - check it out, and don’t write us off for that reason. :)

UCLA’s definitely a better pick if you can deal with the annoying football fans. But still, you should explore your options; maybe you’ll get some scholarship money at Fullerton that would make it hard to pass up yolo
