UCLA vs. Georgetown

I want to major in linguistics or Japanese. I love music, ancient history, literature, languages, movies, international stuff. I want to work or study abroad after college, but I don't know exactly what profession I'll go into. Cost doesn't matter. I live in the California Bay Area.

UCLA
Pros:
-It's a larger university that could offer me more languages to choose from (i.e., it has Dutch)
-Great linguistics program
-Easier to get home
-It has those interesting courses in ancient studies
-It's in a really awesome place for anything related to the movie industry

Cons:
-Large public school, less individualized attention
-The people - I'm kind of sick of all the self-segregation between whites and Asians at my high school.
-It's still in California. I'd feel like I didn't push myself hard enough to go somewhere new.
-I don't really like LA in general

Georgetown
Pros:
-Amazing language program
-Private, smaller university
-It's in a different part of the country
-International bent of the school

Cons:
-The social scene - I'm not sure if I'd fit in with all those partiers, and I'm not exactly preppy
-The religion - I'm Jewish and not religious at all
-Weather - I'm a little afraid of that snow and I get cold easily
-Far from home - I don't know if I want to pack up and fly for 5 hours so often...
-I've heard some iffy things about the linguistics program (that the different sections [like, say, morphology/syntax] are too separate from each other)
-There's a freakin' jet pathway right above the campus.

Anyway, what do you think? I appreciate all input :) Thanks!

"-The people - I'm kind of sick of all the self-segregation between whites and Asians at my high school."

-I know how you feel, I hated that crap so much when I was in high school.

Do you know if it's like that at UCLA?

Yeah, it is. Not only that, it's overwhelmingly Asian.

nm, just go where you'll be happiest.

Asians and whites do mix at UCLA. there are cliques, of course, but far from exclusive. come on.

georgetown is white, wealthy, preppy, conservative, materialistic. these are not bad things just neutral observation. and the weather sucks. if that's you, go there. if not, go to ucla.

International stuff?! G-town SFS for the win!

yeah - but I'd be in the college (as a linguistics major), not SFS.

Niomi,

UCLA's classes are not that large compared to even a number of private universities.

<a href="http://www2.acs.ncsu.edu/UPA/peers/current/research_intensive/class20.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www2.acs.ncsu.edu/UPA/peers/current/research_intensive/class20.htm</a>
<a href="http://www2.acs.ncsu.edu/UPA/peers/current/research_intensive/class50.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www2.acs.ncsu.edu/UPA/peers/current/research_intensive/class50.htm</a></p>

And as far as "international bent" goes, UCLA is pretty international. I wouldn't say that G'Town is some mecca of globalization compared to UCLA. But anyway, I think you should visit both. Remember that UCLA is not in the LA you might be thinking of. Westwood's a very different place from downtown, for example. Furthermore, G'Town's not in DC proper, but in a nice little semi-suburb. Very nice location for G'Town, though...

Oh, and the religion thing? Don't worry. I know tons of Jews, Muslims, Buddhists, and atheists who are more than happy there. They're pretty open to their non-Jesuit friends.
