hi, i just want some feedback. So i got accepted to Indiana University - Bloomington and also got into the Honors College and the Business School( direct admit) and I also got into UCLA(college of letters and science) as an undeclared social science major and i will probaly apply for the biz econ. major at UCLA. The thing is, IU is my first choice and i assumed i wouldnt get into ucla so i never was faced with this question but since i did get in i want some feedback from people so it will help. i plan to study business and i know the kelley program is gud at IU but im also aware that u dont have to major in business obviously to get a job and get an mba. I know that to get the major connections to get gud jobs and help u get into a top b-school is either a prestigious college or a TOP 10 undergrad. bschool. I know that obviously ucla is better than IU pretty much in everything other than music maybe but is there a real SIGNIFICANT difference between ucla vs. IU kelley? i know theres regional bias and stuff like that but despite that would i be "stupid" or really "losing out" if i chose IU for ucla? im sure i want to major in business and IU is currently my first choice but ucla is very eye catching if u know what i mean. thanks for those who give me their opinions.

Are you in-state for UCLA? I really like Indiana and I recently contacted Kelley and asked them to send my son information without my son knowing. :)

I would choose UCLA. What a great place to live for 4 years. And the school is pretty good too. :)

yea i live like 1 hour from ucla the thing is though, i visited indiana and i relaly liked it and before i found out about ucla iU was like the college for me but now its like damn i gota make achoice. dstark in ur opinion, in terms of business do u tink theres a real significant difference between ucla and IU kelley? im not going into i banking or any of tat and i dont even care or know what specific thing im gona study but i know its not accounting lol.

It is just my opinion, but I would go to UCLA. I have never been to Indiana, but I have been to UCLA.

You are going to end up working on the west coast, probably? Most people on the west coast have never heard of the Kelley school.

Like I said, I like Kelley, but my kid can't get into UCLA. I know he would choose UCLA in a heartbeat. If his grades were better, I think UCLA would be his first choice of any school including the Ivies.

I'm up in Northern Californmia and UCLA is very respected. I have a lot of friends that have gone to UCLA and had a great time. (That was a long time ago).

You're only an hour from the school? I'd visit pronto. (I'm kind of an impatient person. :)) Then you can decide. I'm not the one spending the next four years in college.

o ive visited and seen it before, i have a cousin tat went there long time ago wen it was eazy heh. well in terms of getting a job, i dont care where whether its midwest east or west, im an adaptable person and id like to see other parts of america and maybe the world.( im not a traveling freak or anything but wouldnt mind a new setting.) honestly the ONLY problem that im struggling with is ucla sooo much better than IU kelley in terms of business and job connections that i shud just go to ucla?

trust me if u son got into kelley direct admit hes got a shot at ucla. do u tink i thought i had a shot at ucla when i applied? heck no. my grades were below average im still in shock they actually accepted me!!!

I can't answer the question about connections. In Northern California, nobody I know has ever mentioned the Kelley school. Nobody.

Maybe in the midwest and east coast it is very different. Thre aren't too many people from Indiana around here.

If you really love Indiana, go there. You will be fine.

Your grades are a lot better than my kid's. I'm not even sure he will be a direct admit to Kelley.

yea i gues dDAMN U UCLA ADMISSIONS god my mind is in turmoil!!

You are in great shape. You have 2 great choices. You have plenty of time to decide. Enjoy the fact that you have great choices.

yea i know, im fortunate and i am happy :) i tink its ultimately gona depend on my financial aid, if i can afford IU for 4 years. either way im happy i got a gud bakup school.

if theres anyoneelse reading please post something, id like some more feedback and want to know wut u guys tink or wut u guys would do. it would help me make my decision eventually.

i'd choose UCLA in a heartbeat. UCLA is recognized nationwide - worldwide and kelly is not. Not to say kelley isn't a good school - it is, but UCLA, i believe, is better in terms of prestige and recognition. THe fact that you are instate should seal the deal - instate tuition is a bargain vs Kelley out of state tuition...

hm tat is what i was tinkin also, for me i just figured its 2 options:
1) UCLA - save money, gud school and sigh yes beter than indiana, more recognized and people would be like wow as compared to indiana, whats that? is tat in indiana? and ucla only appeal to me for academics
2) Indiana University - bloomington - my dream school(stil is, i really admire this school), oos tuition :(, not as gud as ucla even in business while its still gud not as prestigious i gues, fits me in everyway but in terms of i gues jobs and all ucla is probaly beter choice.

its either ucla with excellent academics and prestige or iub with still excellent academics but not as much prestige and i like everything bout school like the students, environment and stuff. both are big schools. but now tat i tink about it ima stick with indiana and if tat doesnt work out financialy il just go to ucla :) either way i tink its a win win situation cuz im basically choosing between my dream school ( IUB) and a great school (ucla).

As a UCLA MBA graduate, I'd like to tell you UCLA--but the answer I will give you is: Go to Indiana.

I'm not saying this flippantly. I'm suggesting my own son go to Indiana University for Business school. (He's already been accepted to Indiana, and just petitioned for Direct admit to Kelley).

Like you said--the choice is having a real business degree or having a Econ degree. No comparison--business degree wins every time. I can give you names of many people who are in the business area who will agree with this assessment.

On the other hand, if we are talking MBA programs--now I'd recommend UCLA over Indiana. UCLA's MBA program is top-notch (although with Indiana improving so quickly they are probably pretty close now).

(I will agree that the area's around the two schools don't quite compare--Westwood beats out Bloomington slightly, but LA beats out Indianapolis overall). Anyway, Indiana gets my vote.

One final comment--I live in northern California--so obviously, I disagree with dstark's comment about nobody ever mentioning Indiana up here, since I'm mentioning them.

Also, I do agree with the comment about considering the cost. UCLA is in-state, so the cost would be much less than the cost of going to Indiana (about $10K vs $25K per year)--so you do need to take this into account.

Lastly, my son is (and probably you are) concerned about going to a non-metro area like Bloomington to a degree. But Bloomington is not West Lafayette (sorry, Purdue) where all students do is hang out at the local Walmart. As my wife puts it, Bloomington is more like Los Gatos in northern California or Santa Monica in southern California than anyplace else. Also, keep in mind that San Jose and Indianapolis are almost exactly the same population--which gives you an idea of what things are like. The biggest downside for me would be no ocean and no mountains, just plains.

I hope this help you make your decision.

lol thanks calcruzer ur opinion helps alot!!! the fact tat u went to ucla and got an mba there sort of reinforces my belief taht Indiana is a solid school and that their b-school is not bad :). yea i kno about the out of state costs and i visited in febuary and liked it. so far its gona depend on how much financial aid they give me cuz its oos. actually, im not really concerned about the area, it'd be nice to study in a suburban/country type of setting for 4 years, im getting sick of the city a bit aniwayz heh . again thanks for your thoughts calcruzer.

also, after hearing how hard it is at ucla i dont i can handle it academically, indiana on the other hand is probaly more on my level ( i know the b-school is demanding but i stil tink i can handle it beter than ucla besides the ucla site says a biz econ requires calc. bc!!! which means i wil get screwed.) u tink a econ degree at ucla will be "worse" or less preferred than a business degree? i always thought the best way to get job connections/grad. school was either a top university e.g. ucla or a top undergrad. business. schools like northwestern dont have business degrees and im SURE they do fine getting jobs in business LOL

cmon now.. i would pick ucla in a heartbeat.

haha i understand jl_visionz who wouldnt? compared to IU, UCLA obviously is more appealing but everyone has different standards, goals and ideas of what a gud school is so crazy as it is some would choose a "lower" school over a gud one.
