UCLA vs NYU premed and neuroscience major

My parents have told me that money is not an issue. In terms of cost, I live in New York, so NYU is clearly closer. The cost will be practically the same with travel expenses in fact. That being said, I know that UCLA is ranked slightly higher for both my major and in general. It is also more focused on the sciences and research. However, there have been recent cuts to the school budget which make me hesitant. Also, at NYU the student:teacher ratio is much lower, and I was accepted in the Presidential Honors Scholar Program. I won’t know about UCLA until after I send in my deposit. NYU is also in the city which has many renowned hospitals and research opportunities that UCLA may not have. Plus, it’s closer to home, and my parents are leaning to NYU. I mean, it is new york, and there are a lot of places to have internships, and forge bonds with important alumni. But can you find the same opportunities at UCLA? And is it worth it to fly so far away for school? UCLA has better academics in the sciences and in neuroscience. But, NYU has better opportunities outside the classroom, class sizes are smaller, I am in the Honors Program, and it’s close.

Can I get any recommendations on what other people would do? This is the hardest decision of my life and I have until May 1st. Thanks!

I don’t really know anything about those two schools. Since you’re posting this here instead of http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-los-angeles/ or http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/new-york-university/ I’ll give you the best advice I can which is that Brown is the best place to be a pre med (especially for neuroscience): http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/brown-university/1284648-brown-is-the-best-place-to-be-a-pre-med-p1.html

I think NYU and UCLA are academic peers and research might be easier at UCLA as the medical center is right on campus while NYU’s medical school is uptown east. Forget alumni as an undergraduate going into medicine and you can do internships in the city during the summer or in LA if you prefer. would visit both and decide which appeals to you. Might be good for you to have a change of scenery for four years.
