UCLA vs NYU

Ok so 2 questions...

first, which would u recomend, nyu or ucla. i want to study economics and politics and the nyu job prospects seem to be better in new york, but the course better in ucla. i like the whole party life of ucla, with the frats, school spirit and all that, it seems that nyu is more individual.

The only problem is quiet a big one. i basically prefer ucla over nyu at the minute for the reasons noted above, but i applied early decision to nyu, thinking ucla was a massive long shot for an international student. I withdrew my offers after i was accepted from nyu, but this morning i got an acceptance letter from ucla. If i end up choosing ucla over nyu, is there any way i can go there instead or am i 100% bound.

thanks for the help guys

Well you can get out of the ED contract but it’ll be a slightly difficult and illegal process. I don’t know exactly how to do it but I know its possible. I think overall UCLA is a better school although NYU will have a LOT more recognition on the east coast. Also keep in mind that NYU does not really provide the whole college experience that UCLA will. If you’re looking for a job on the east coast then I’d just stick with NYU. If you want great academics, fun, and decent recognition throughout the country then go to UCLA.

I’m slightly biased towards UCLA since I’m from New York and I’m kind of annoyed by the amount of prestige NYU has built up for no reason :P.

thanks dude. also, though u spoke about the reputation in america, does anyone know the reputation of the two schools abroad. would like to move back to the uk at some point, will one degree have more weight over the other.

Your degree is only REALLY important to get your first serious job. If you work in the states before moving back, your work experience will affect your job opportunities in the UK far more than which school you graduated from.

I’m in the same dilemma, except I applied RD to NYU and they let me know super early because I was admitted into their Liberal Studies Program.

I’m leaning slightly toward UCLA right now.

hey! I applied to NYU too and even Fordham where I was accepted EA as I really like the idea of living and studying in NYC. BUT when I received my UCLA decision last week, I made up my mind that a UCLA college experience(academics, life, college reputation etc.) would be better if compared to going to NYU or Fordham. The decision totally surprised me because I thought I had no chance of getting in! But I still love NYC though,so that’s the only remaining question in my head, but as of today, if I don’t get into the 3 ivies I applied to (one is is in NY),I guess it’s UCLA for me.

I’m in a similar dilemma… well similar but very different.
I don’t really care for the whole college experience which is why NYU makes sense and I’d die to go to school in NYC. On the other hand, my family is bribing me (literally bribing… I get a house, car, and more if I go to UCLA) and guilt-tripping me to go to UCLA. I’m also from LA so it would be nice to go home… gah. Also, I feel like with UCLA if I wanted to I could stay away from the whole college experience thing because I have a whole other city.

So in terms of the schools themselves, which one’s better for a future marketing/pr/advertising/communications related job?

Seriously, why apply early decision in the first place? If you truly did want to attend NYU, this wouldn’t have been a problem.

Here is what NYU says about this:

when ur an international student, its hard to get into ucla. thought my chances were virtutally non existant and so figured i might as well put all my effort into getting a place at another sick uni. Having said that, i do recognise now that it was a stupid move and i regret it
