Hey guys,
i got accepted to UCLA and NYU gls. few things to know about my dilemma...
1. NYU gls is a new program with 160 students or so. my classes will be small so i will reap the benefits of close contact with professors. UCLA does not offer such contact..
2. UCLA is a "better" school especially since the GLS program is brand new and i would be the inaugural class if i do decide to go to GLS. there is that risk of deciding to attend, and ending up in a terrible program (though it sounds amazing according to the website).
3.I plan on going into law school and NYU has a superior program to UCLA's (i'm not even sure if UCLA has a reputable law school while NYU's is ranked 5th!) and i want to be able to build close relationships with professors(since class sizes are small) so that i can have a leg up in applying to nyu law later.
4.MONEY. UCLA is no doubt, much cheaper than living in nyc attending NYU.
5. i love NYC and all my friends are going to college on the east coast, i've never been to LA and no one is going there.

considering the pros and cons of both schools, i'm having a really hard time deciding between the two...i'm still waiting for columbia but i doubt i will get in... though that would solve all my problems lol. some heartfelt suggestions/words of advice would really help!

I just got admittedyeaaaaah, but I was wondering when the winter semester starts and if there is going to be some kind of introduction weekend/week.
Does anybody know when you can move into the dorms? (Btw: Are there campus dorms/apartments where you dont have to share a room
? )

THX!

Have you considered weather differences? LA is heaven compared to NY :)

I’d personally choose UCLA based on reputation, weather, and tuition. At the same time, the small classes at NYU are tempting. And if it were truly better in the field I wanted to pursue, I’d have trouble choosing as well. I wish you the best of luck, whatever you final decision may be!

First of all, I would not worry about GLS being new at NYU. NYU is a great university and your goal to get to law school will be met by your GPA and LSAT scores. Second, UCLA’s Law School is ranked 15 or 16th in the country. Either choice is a good choice, so it depends on what kind of experience you want.

UCLA offers a “Pac 10” big university experience, but unlike NYC you need a car to experience LA fully. Public Transit is horrible but improving. You don’t want to get stuck in the West LA/Santa Monica/Westwood bubble. Academically, it is right up there with the top schools and you will serve yourself well by performing. You won’t have any trouble getting into any law school in the nation. You can have a dorm experience as well that is on campus vs NYU which doesn’t have the same kind of central campus.

As for NYU, not really big on sports or that PAC 10 feel, but you get the NYC experience. I am not certain you are actually from NYC but if might do you some good to experience another part of the country for a while. Although, NYC will not require a car and of course is a GREAT city.

I say if you are from the East Coast, you may want to try something different for undergrad, also I don’t think any extra cost is worth it for either of these places. They are too even. I would opt for UCLA personally, unless of course NYU is generous with its financial package.
