UCLA vs U MICH

UCLAri,

You can always find small minority of 2bd apts for <1400/month (already not considered cheap for most other cities) in LA and they sound like great deals but usually that's not the case once you see them in person. Some have no parking, some have no elevators, some are tiny, some are on streets that look kinda questionable, and some are near the dumpster...etc. There's no reason landlords don't charge at least the market rate (probably around 1700/mo for 2br in West LA) if there's no catch.

One of my coworkers actually just moved from Torrance to West LA. She and her friend got a 2-bd for 1600/mo in West LA after looking fairly extensively. She said most other listings are more expensive.

I saw what listed as 1-bd in Venice for 900/month before. It's by the beach and I thought it was a steal. So I went to the building and it looked kinda run down and it's more like a studio rather than 1 bd. That was three years ago.

Sam,

Of course. But to say that affordable housing can't be found in and around UCLA is a bit exaggerated in my experience. Heck, I found CHEAPER housing in LA than I've found in and around UCSD.

Sure. But if you're willing to go inland a bit, the market rate shifts quite a bit.

But I wouldn't say SD is cheap though and isn't La Jolla one of the most expensive places in SD? What's affordable to you probably isn't really that affordable. What is the rent around Ann Arbor anyway? We haven't even mentioned that.

What's affordable to me = not very affordable. I'm a grad student. I have like 0 income. I lucked out though, and got a place for $1200 a month (2 bdrm w/2 bath).

But yeah, something tells me that Ann Arbor won't be super cheap either.

Michigan is the better option

about equal, I would say.

UCLAri,

So you are saying you found a 2br/2ba for <1200/month when you were at UCLA? When was that anyway? I believe such deal is extremely rare, if exists, in West LA these days.
