I was recently admitted to both schools and I was wondering what would be a better school for me. For UCLA, I was accepted in chemical engineering and for Cal, I was accepted in biology (College of letter and science)

My question is, what is more prestigious? and which is a better department? thanks :)

It ultimately depends on what you want to do, UCLA doesn’t have a particularly strong ChemE program, but if you want to be a ChemE, then go there

Berkeley has a good bio program, so if you want to do bio and im guessing be a premed, then go there; bio is much easier for premed than chemical engineering btw.

is cost or location an issue? have you visited both?

thanks both for replying,
thank is my problem, they are two too different departments
and I haven’t visited both schools, I only passed by UCLA once and I really haven’t had a chance visit berkeley yet, and I am planning on becoming a premed, so bio seems good for me, but is it worth going to berkeley instead of ucla? by the way, cost and location is not an issue at all :)

Chemical Engineering for Pre-Med is difficult no matter how smart you are. But if you want a back up plan in case you find you don’t want to be a doctor, being a Chem E is a solid back-up plan. If you were to go to Berkeley and major in Bio (MCB I assume?), you might face the same problem but will not have as great a back-up plan. If you’re a bio major who doesn’t want to be a doctor, your options become limited to graduate school (if you’re GPA is solid) or teaching high school.

Regarding your question of prestige, Berkeley and LA are known around the world but I would still give the upper hand to Berkeley. But I would advise you not to weight your decision heavily on this because in the long run, undergrad prestige won’t matter if you’re going to grad/med school.

On a side note, I liked Berkeley’s atmosphere over UCLA and that’s why I picked Berkeley. I don’t know you personally, but I felt more comfortable in Berkeley. The people were very friendly in both places but Berkeley just felt right. I also picked Berkeley because of my major.

My advice is to just visit both colleges and go by where you see yourself fitting best for the next four years. You also have to consider career path. These are two completely different majors but both can lead to pre-med. If you really can’t decide, flip a coin. :)
