Hi everyone, I think at least some of you are torn by this question. I really want to hear your opinion about this. I have been admitted to both colleges, and I intend to major in stats. Many of my friends go to Berkeley and I am taking Multivarible Cal at Berkeley City College, so I am pretty familiar with Berkeley, both the city and the college. I have been reading about some negative experiences about Berkeley on this forum, and somehow my gut tells me it is not the right place for me, even though all of my friends, teachers, parents and my FA package tell me otherwise. I am visiting UCLA next week. So please, anything would help :(

Berkeley is Berkeley. Grade deflation, bad professors, long assignments, and armed robberies.

However, there’s the great people, clubs, and reputation of Berkeley. To be 100% honest, Berkeley as a school is not the greatest. It’s expensive, Evans Hall is ugly, and there’s grade deflation. However, the people in this school are just amazing. So many great people are here, and as indicated, you have friends here too!

For a college experience, UCLA would also be a good option. They have a rising reputation, and aren’t too far off of UCB in terms of USWNR rankings. However, if you feel you’d be happier there, go there. Make new friends, live in a new environment, all that jazz. You seem to know Berkeley already anyways, right?

If I were to do it again, I would pick Berkeley, but only because my girlfriend is here, and I love the friends I’ve made. That’s the only reason I’m surviving here. If my girlfriend wasn’t here, I’d go to UCLA without regretting it. They offered me Regents, and hey, it’s Southern California. I have friends and cousins down there, and they’re loving it, while I feel like I’m slowly withering away, in the background of over 25,000 other, over-qualified, and almost-genius students.

I know it’s cheesy, but go where your heart tells you. You’ll be better off in the long run.

Thanks GSG900 for your genuine reply! It makes me feel better about Berkeley. Btw my boyfriend who is a year ahead of me goes to UCLA… hmm… When a guy chooses a college because of his girlfriend, people will be like “aww, that is so cute.” But when a girl does it, she is deemed clingy and dependent.
