UCLA vs. UCSD for engineering

I got accepted in Mechanical engineering for both these schools, and the warren college honors program for UCSD. I plan on switching to either computer science or computer science and engineering. As of right now I think there is a good chance I will go to grad school but I'm not sure.

Taking everything into account; including research opportunities, prestige, engineering program, and campus life; which university should I go to? Also, how easily I will be able to switch majors is important.

I've heard UCLA's engineering program is better but UCSD is rising very quickly and could soon surpass UCLA. I've also heard UCLA has a much better campus life. Are these true?

btw I've visited both campuses. I like UCSD's campus a little bit more but they're both pretty equal. The financial aid at each school is about the same.

UCSD has ALREADY surpassed UCLA engg. Check out the latest US news ranking. If you want I can post the rankings here.

UCSD’s engineering program is ranked one or two above UCLA’s…
I would imagine UCLA has greater research opportunities, a lot more overall prestige, and probably a better campus life (but that’s arguable).

Not gonna lie.

I went to UCSD for a conference last weekend and was so impressed with their engineering program. A lot of design labs (as opposed to our single design lab for CSE) and dedicated buildings for a couple of engineering majors (CS, BioE). So much more impressive than Boelter…ugh.

That being said, UCLA engineering is great because of the many engineering student groups on campus. I’m sure UCSD has great clubs as well, but involvement with any of the engineering groups at UCLA really does help build your interest in engineering and exposes you to a lot of opportunities/experiences.

The CS/CSE program at UCLA is good. The professors in the department are overall AMAZING (Nachenberg, Reinman, Eggert, Smallberg, Kohler…).

ucsd is attracting younger and more dynamic faculty in engg. It is a more attractive place for up and coming professors. ultimately that is how a university goes up in ranking and prestige. i agree with Made in China that ucsd is only a couple of notches above ucla in engg. so that is not significant. what is significant is the trend. and ucsd is trending in the right direction!

Also computer science at ucsd has great full time advisors. they pride and distinguish themselves based on that. i think it is totally worth it.

oh, and cs in ucsd is not an impacted major. so it is easy to switch into. you want to check out if that is the case at ucla.
