I've been accepted to both UCLA and UCSD. At the moment, I'm having a difficult time trying to decide between the two. I'm going to be a bio major, with the long-term goal of being accepted into a med school. I know that UCSD has a better bio program, but I am somewhat attracted to the campus of UCLA and the prestige that accompanies that school.

My main question is: If I decide to go to UCLA, which is weaker in bio, how will that affect/hurt my chance of medical school acceptance? Also, is it better to graduate from the Honors program of UCLA or be a Regents Scholar from UCSD?

Both schools are excellent universities and both are very good at bio. UCSD is probably a bit stronger than UCLA in terms of pre med. But the difference is marginal. Both are excellent pre med schools, with excellent reputations and excellent med schools. Go where you feel most comfertable and want to go. If you would rather be at UCLA, go there. You really cant go wrong with either school.

Personally, the academic difference is insignificant. However, the social life and campus feel is better at UCLA. If you have a change of heart and may want to get into elite consulting/ IB jobs, UCLA will give you better opportunity than UCSD. For med school, it's pretty even.

Hey! I want to reach out to you cus i was in the EXACT same position last year.

I got into UCLA and UCSD, with a major in Bio. I go to UCSD aaaand..i kinda regret it. Im no longer a bio major, but i feel like i passed up an oppertunity of a life time. My suggestion would be maybe UCLA for undergrad and then UCSD for grad....?

UCLA by far. UCSD is an excellent school academically but it's definitely lacking in the social department. Even one of my engineering friends is having a great time at UCLA. The people I know at UCSD wish they had gone elsewhere.

go to UCLA gosh darn it! I did the same thing last, asking people for advice, and they all hinted UCLA but they didnt directly say "if you dont go to UCLA you will prolly regret it for the rest of your life"

i mean, i loooove the friends ive made at UCSD and i couldnt find them anywhere else, but ill always wonder now. go to UCLA.

Hi, I'm transferring this Fall 2008. I'm also a bio major but I'm torn between UCLA and UCSD. I understand that UCSD may be better for bio in terms of research opportunities since so many of the biotech companies are located there.

However, UCLA's prestige and campus are making my decision harder.

I haven't been to UCSD campus though (I will visit soon).

Can someone list out the pros and cons for each UCs? Thanks :)

UCLA is the #2 UC and a top 25 school in the country. Plus you get the big time college experience (sports, spirit, living in LA,) I say UCLA hands down.

Can a UCLA student or alum let me know of the biology research opportunities? Are they that much harder or less than what UCSD offers? (It's what I heard)

This is a little late, but I just wanted to add my two cents.

I currently go to UCSD myself and I think I made the right choice. UCSD is considered the #3 UC generally and is also a top school in the country. What UCSD lacks in big sports (i.e. football), it makes up for in other sports (such as softball, soccer, water polo, crew, tennis, etc.). I have to agree though that UCSD does have a bit of a spirit deficiency, but it's there; you just have to look a little bit harder than at UCB, UCLA or UCD.

Academically, both UCSD and UCLA offer rigorous opportunities for learning and research. It ultimately lies in what you choose to do with the opportunities within your reach. And if location also factors into your choice, La Jolla is a beautiful community and offers so many outdoor opportunities just within walking distance of campus (surfing, swimming, bike riding, etc.)

Hope this helps and good luck either way! [=
